Balsam (lat. Impatiens) or light is a favorite plant of bourgeois pre-revolutionary Russia, an indispensable decoration for windows overlooking the street. Growing up in difficult conditions, it bloomed gratefully almost all year round, bringing into the house a piece of love and a constant reminder of faithfulness in love and life. In the balsaminaceae family (Balsaminaceae A. Rich.), The plants are classified in a separate type genus under the name Impatiens or Balsamina Mill., Which includes more than 500 species.

Description

The generic name of touch-me-not, in other translations the sensitive, pressure-resistant (Impatiens L.) plants received for an interesting adaptation to reproduction. Under natural conditions, at the slightest touch of animals or birds to a ripe fruit capsule, its valves suddenly open and 5 quickly curling dry valves scatter seeds at a considerable distance from the mother plant.

The genus of balsamic plants is represented by one- and perennial herbaceous plants, often bush-shaped, 25-200 cm high. The root is located close to the soil surface, low-branched or fibrous, powerful. Some species form a rhizome with a large number of roots collected in a fibrous knot.

Stems are spreading, branched, smooth, straight, juicy, translucent, swollen at the nodes. The color of the stems ranges from light green to purple.

Leaves are simple with alternate, opposite arrangement along the entire length of the stems. Sometimes, at the top of the stem, the leaves are collected in whorls. The leaf blade is up to 12 cm oval-cordate, ovate-lanceolate, long or short petiolate, serrate along the edge or solid, green of various shades. On the jagged edges and at the base of the leaves there are dark red glands that secrete droplets of sweet juice, which in the air turn into sugar crystals that attract ants. This adaptation helps the plant to preserve pollen and flower honey for pollinators - bees, bumblebees, birds (hummingbirds).

The flowers are correct and irregular, 3 to 5 cm in diameter. The color range of flowers includes more than 15 color shades: red, pink, white, purple and others. Among the large variety, blue colors are still missing. The flowers are simple, double, single, or collected in loose umbellate axillary inflorescences bearing 2-15 flowers. Hybrid forms are often two-colored.

In the process of development, plants have acquired the ability to protect pollen from getting wet. Flower buds are located in the leaf axils on short pedicels. As the flower develops, the pedicels lengthen and the flowers are protected by the leaves. Raindrops roll down the half-bent leaf blade, leaving the pollen dry. During flowering, fully blooming flowers on elongated pedicels rise above the green mass of leaves for better pollination.

The flowers have a double cup. 5 sepals, often of different colors, one extended into a spur. The petals of the 5-membered corolla are loose or fused in pairs. An unpaired petal is usually located opposite the spur. Stamens have a very interesting property. There are 5 of them, the filaments grow together with anthers, forming a cap. The cap opens precisely during the period of maturation of the stigma of the pistil, which ensures maximum pollination. Long flowering. In indoor culture it is practically year-round, in open ground - until frost.

For its abundant long flowering, the plant is called in England "Busy Lizzy", in Germany - "Zealous Liza", in Austria - "Beautiful wreath", in Russia there is a very rich list of folk names: Vanka-wet, light, touchy, ever-flowering, jumper, maiden beauty, Vanka-vstanka and others.

The fruit is a juicy fleshy polyspermous box of fusiform shape. After full ripening, the fruit, under light influence from the outside, instantly opens with 5 twisted shutters, scattering the seeds at a distance of up to 2 meters.

Classification

Currently, balsams are divided into 3 groups:

 • traditional species - with flowers of red, pink, white color and pure green leaves,
 • first generation hybrids (F1) with lush flowering, almost completely hiding the green leaves of the plants. This group has got orange and purple colors of flowers,
 • new Guinea hybrids, which are distinguished by variegated leaves, double large flowers with a wide range of colors of corolla petals.

Plant types with hybrid flowers are divided into 3 groups, differing in the shape of the flowers:

 • rosy,
 • camelliaceae,
 • carnation.

According to the shape of the aboveground mass, they are classified as upright, bushy and ampelous. Upright and bush-like forms can be dwarf, the height of which does not exceed 25 cm, bush-bouquet, no more than 40-45 cm in height, in which a compact aboveground mass is formed, almost completely hidden by flowers and inflorescences. Ampelnye are ordinary ornamental flowering plants suitable for growing in pots, on balconies, terraces and in the open field.

The most popular species in floriculture

The most widespread in garden culture received, in a different reading Waller (Impatiens walleriana)... A perennial plant, when used in culture, it is grown as an annual. Flowers are irregular, large, up to 4 cm in diameter, axillary, sessile. The color is white, red, pink, purple. The flowers are simple or double. In order for Waller's balsam to form flowering bushes in early summer, sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out in the first decade of March. It is impractical to transplant adult bushes into pots at the end of the season. They do not get used to indoor conditions well and, as a rule, die.

Hybrid forms of plants are very elegant, especially from the group of New Guinea balsamines.

New Guinea balsam (Impatiens neuguinea) perennial bushy plant commonly used in indoor culture. In the garden it is grown as an annual. Great in monoclumb. Huge bright flowers of different shades against the background of bright green, bronze or variegated leaves are admirable. They are demanding on environmental conditions: they cannot stand wind, direct rays of the sun and a hungry substrate. If all the requirements of agricultural technology are fulfilled, they please with an elegant flowering until frost. They are absolutely not resistant to cold. The slightest cold snap causes the death of plants.

Distribution area

East India was considered the homeland of the family, the area expanded, capturing Sri Lanka. Currently, balsamic plants are also referred to as African plants, especially the line of hybrids with double flowers. The balsamic genus is widespread in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa, where about 400 species grow. Few species are found in the temperate latitudes of Asia, Europe, America. On the territory of Russia in room culture, balsams are grown everywhere. In horticultural culture, they grow mainly in the southern regions, as an annual. They are planted through seedlings or seeds directly into the ground when stable warm weather sets in.

Outdoor cultivation

Environmental requirement

Balsams are light-loving and bloom profusely only when grown in open places. On growing balsam and caring for it in partial shade, some types react with a decrease in flowering. Direct rays of the sun oppress both the generative and vegetative organs of the plant. From direct rays of the sun, they need a light lace shading.

Soil composition

Grow well on slightly acidic soils, light, breathable. In places of compact planting and under individual plants for cultivation, it is better to prepare the soil mixture by diluting the garden soil with sand in a ratio of 3: 1. If the soil is heavy with a high content of organic matter (chernozems), then a mixture for balsams from 2 parts of soil, 2 parts of sand and 1 part of peat will be most suitable. We remove the upper part of the soil, lay the drainage and fill in the soil mixture. You can add 1-2 parts of mature humus or vermicompost to such a mixture.

Watering

Forming significant biomass in a short time, balsams need abundant watering. But with increased amounts of water, delicate roots and the lower part of the stems at the root collar are quickly affected by rot, and the plant may die. Therefore, plants in dense soils need good drainage. Stagnant water is unacceptable.

Top dressing

Abundant long-term flowering of balsam requires feeding. Plants are fed with organic and mineral fertilizers with microelements in 10-12 days, alternating types of fertilizers. From mineral fertilizers, it is better to use a complete flower fertilizer. The packages indicate the doses and phases of feeding.

Please note! overfeeding causes "fattening" of plants. They intensively form the vegetative mass and reduce the flowering intensity. So that the plants do not reduce decorativeness, the faded inflorescences are cut off. In this case, the flowering period is lengthened.

Planting and leaving

The prepared soil or soil mixture for planting balsam is dug up, adding humus and trace elements. Depending on the shape of the bush, the plants are planted at different distances from each other. The distance between tall ones is 30-35 cm, and dwarf ones up to 20-25 cm.

Seedlings or rooted cuttings are planted in the ground in central Russia in the first decade of June, and in the southern regions in the first half of May. They are unpretentious in leaving. The soil is loosened until the rows close. In order for the plants to form beautiful bushes, the elongated shoots are cut to ½ the height of the bush before flowering and throughout the growing season they systematically (3-4 times per season) pinch the tops of the stems, giving it the desired shape.

Diseases and pests

With proper agricultural technology, balsam is practically not damaged by pests. If the requirements for care are violated, balsam aphids, meadow bugs, whiteflies, and strawberry mites settle on the plants. Pests are quickly destroyed by bioinsecticide treatments that are harmless to humans and animals: Bona Forte, Bitoxibacillin and others. The breeding and processing times of the plants are indicated on the packaging or in the recommendations.

To destroy rot, it is necessary to dry the soil, that is, to reduce the rate of watering and watering less often. The soil can be treated with trichodermine or phytosporin for wet loosening.

Reproduction

Balsam is propagated by seeds and cuttings. For propagation of balsam by cuttings, they are cut in spring or autumn from healthy adult plants. They take root so easily that they can be planted for rooting in sand, treated with a solution of root stimulants, or directly into the ground. Rooting can be done in water. It is enough to prepare a solution with a root and lower the cuttings in the lower part into a container. Within 2 weeks, they form roots.

If you need a large number of plants for decorating flower beds, mixborders, rabatok, then they resort to growing balsam from seeds. In January-February, a soil mixture is prepared from leafy, humus earth, sand (1: 1: 0.5). Transferred to a prepared container, moisten and sow in shallow grooves. From above, the seeds are covered with peat and the container is covered with a film, creating the conditions for a mini greenhouse. The container is placed in a warm place.

The soil is systematically moistened from a spray bottle, avoiding waterlogging, so that fungal or bacterial rot does not start. When shoots appear, the container is transferred to a more illuminated place or supplemented. They are planted in open ground when warm weather sets in. Plants bloom when planted on a constant basis in a month and bloom profusely before the onset of cold weather. Balsam can be transplanted as needed, even during flowering.

Waller's balsam Strawberry with cream

A feature of the ATHENA series balsams are large semi-double and double flowers (4-5 cm in diameter) and the ampelous structure of the bush, which makes it an original solution for the garden. It will add a special charm to any balcony or window. The plant is powerful, with a lash length of 35-40 cm when grown as ampelous, and up to 30 cm high, when grown in flowerpots and pots. It is an unrivaled plant for decorating shady and semi-shady places.

SEEDING: for seedlings under glass from February to April. The seeds are not sprinkled, as they need light for germination, but direct sunlight should also be avoided. The substrate (more often peat with the addition of clay to retain moisture) is slightly acidic with a pH of 5.5-5.8. Seedlings appear in 3-5 days at a temperature of 22-24 ° C. Seedlings require constant maintenance of high soil moisture, but not air, therefore, it is necessary to regularly ventilate to avoid damage by gray rot.
kykov is carried out 4-5 weeks after sowing in the phase of the 2-3rd true leaf. Further optimal T for plant development is 17-19 ° C. Avoid hypothermia of the seedlings, this will lead to yellowing of the upper leaves. For better tillering, pinching is necessary. Before planting in the ground, the seedlings can be hardened by daytime airing. Planting seedlings in the ground is carried out after the establishment of stable warm weather. It prefers shady places with high soil moisture, protected from gusty winds; in open sunny places, the upper leaves can burn.

CARE: they need regular watering, feeding is carried out 7-10 days after planting in the ground and, as needed, the indicator will be partial yellowing of the edges of the lower leaves, which will disappear after feeding. Try to avoid the use of ammonium nitrogen fertilizers - this will lead to rare flowering and excessive elongation of the shoots.

FLOWERING: occurs in 9-11 weeks, when grown in a pot (d = 10 cm), and after 12-15 weeks - in a 30 cm planter.

Growing this flower from seeds, you have to try. But the subsequent reproduction by cuttings will be extremely simple.

Two years ago I bought a bag of seeds in the store terry balsam Waller (Impatiens walleriana) F 1 Strawberry with cream... The first attempt to grow a flower with a "tasty" name was unsuccessful. Sowed seeds in coco soil. Apparently, this was my mistake.

The second attempt was made a year later in mid-March. This time sowed seeds in nutrient soil, which was kept moist. I put the dish with the crops in a plastic bag and tied it on top with a thin elastic band. From time to time I aired the "greenhouse".

After three weeks, sprouts appeared. Of the 10 seeds, only 4 sprouted, but soon two sprouts died. The remaining seedlings developed unevenly - one did not change at all, but the second grew by leaps and bounds and branched well. A little more than a month later, the little sprout turned into a lush bush 15 cm high, on which several buds have already appeared! Soon the first flowers bloomed, and the bush continued to grow.

In May, when the threat of frost passed, relocated your pet outside, placing it in a sunny and calm place. In the fresh air, the balsam grew even stronger, reached a height of 25 cm and was covered with red-white flowers about 4 cm in diameter.

Having at least one sprout of balsam, multiply it is no longer difficult - cut branches in water take root in a week. Balsam, cut and planted in flower beds, containers and pots, will decorate a garden, terrace or balcony from May to October. The possibilities of such landscaping are varied due to the fact that the plant tolerates light shading well. And care consists in regular watering and periodic dressing fertilizer with a small amount of nitrogen during the flowering period.

At the end of September, the bush grown from the cutting in the summer was taken home, and until mid-November it pleased with abundant flowering, only the flowers became a little smaller. Now balsam has a short break in flowering, but judging by the many buds, the next wave will be very soon. I take care of the plant in the same way as in the summer - I water it often, every fourth watering I add Kemir's fertilizer for indoor plants to the water.

Our reference

Plants of the Balsamin family are distinguished by a variety of species - annual and perennial herbaceous plants and shrubs growing in the tropics of East Africa and India, in Ceylon, New Guinea, in the temperate regions of Asia. Balsam came to Europe at the end of the 16th century. The list of new varieties and hybrids of Waller's balsam is so large that experts combine them in a series characterized by a certain color range, plant height, flower shape, which can be simple, double or semi-double.

Sowing time and varieties

An obvious plus in growing these plants - they can be planted already in January, when the New Year holidays have died down, it is far from summer, to the main sowing of all kinds of tomatoes and peppers, too, but you already want to go to the country, and your hands are "itching" in anticipation of planting.

For me, growing begonias and balsam was a debut, and quite successful. I chose varieties:

 • ever-flowering begonia "Senator" F1 (a mixture of white, red, pink) from "Aelita", because I wanted to grow it as a home plant,
 • waller's balsam "Safari" from "Euro-seeds", as I wanted to grow a mini-bush,
 • terry balsam F1 "Strawberry with cream" from "Russian garden" because of the very beautiful flowers.

I sowed the seeds in tablets, it turned out to be very convenient. You don't need to close up the seeds, just cover the container with the pills with glass or film, or just pack everything in a transparent bag and tie it up, making a "greenhouse". Remember to ventilate once a day or two. Seeds sprout at a temperature of about 20-22 degrees, so I kept the "greenhouses" on the windowsill, it is convenient to check the temperature using a room thermometer. You do not need to close them, they always come up in the light. I also illuminated the "greenhouses" from bags in the morning and in the evening with a fluorescent lamp.

It is not necessary to spray the soil before the seeds appear, excess moisture is useless. But you can't dry it either. You can check if there is enough moisture in the tablets by placing the tablets on a layer of vermiculite - if the vermiculite is dry, you can add water right to the bottom of the container where the tablets are. They themselves will absorb as much as necessary.

Sowed in two stages, February 10 and 22. Germination turned out to be so-so, from 7 begonia seeds 3 pieces emerged in 8 days, but, as it turned out later, they were all different colors. It is a great success to get all three colors in three plants from a bag of a mixture of three species! Out of 18 balsam seeds, only 3 emerged in 13-15 days, and I was lucky again - they were representatives of both types of balsam.

Figure: 2. Balsam a month after germination

Seedling care

Begonia develops very slowly, but it is absolutely not capricious. A couple of times I poured seedlings, but she survived that too. To avoid accidental overflow in the future, I began to use a spray bottle. Well, and continued to light up both in the morning and in the evening.

I bought a special, slightly acidic soil. It is called "For begonias", the instructions say that it is suitable for balsams. Somewhere in a couple of weeks after the sprouts sprouted and collected three leaves, I transplanted, or rather, transferred the tablets into a 200 ml glass, adding a little vermiculite to the soil. It is impossible to deepen the sprouts. 10-15 days later after the transshipment, I fed both begonias and balsams with a special liquid fertilizer "Begonia".

I continued to keep the seedlings on the windowsill. She opened the window, but not for long.

Balsam develops faster than begonias, because it is larger and more bushy in its adult form. Waller's balsam "Safari" will generally grow with powerful branched stems and will be a real bush. Therefore, balsam is transplanted into a larger container at the beginning of April.

Figure: 3. Balsam "Safari" on the left, "Strawberry with cream" on the right

In early May, begonia can also be transplanted into a permanent pot. I added expanded clay on top to protect it from the cat - he really loves to break the ground in flower pots. However, if you do not have the same harmful creature as mine, then you can not add expanded clay.

Figure: 4. Three-month-old begonia has only released its third pair of leaves

But balsam "Strawberry with cream" at the same age already gave the first bud - very interesting, with a tail. And although I bought this species only because of the unusual flowering, I certainly did not take a single normal photo! There is only a photo of the first bud.

Well, "Safari" at the same age - 3 months, required a garter, as it developed powerful and bushy, as promised by the seed producer.

Neither begonia nor balsam can tolerate frost at all, so they must be transported to the dacha after the final setting of the night temperature above +8.
I was too lazy to transplant balsams into the ground, and later I was very sorry. It turns out that the roots of "Safari" balsam are very powerful, it was nevertheless necessary to transplant it into open ground. Maybe I would have achieved more flowering. When in the fall I took out the Safari from a large pot, I was once again convinced that the balsam was cramped in the pot.

Figure: 7. Root system of balsam "Safari"

It is not very convenient to grow balsam as indoor plants, as it, according to its popular nickname "Vanka-wet", requires daily watering, better even twice a day. Basically, I lived in a dacha, and at home there were "raids". And after a week my "Strawberry with Cream" dried up ... However, I cut off the dried part, leaving a tiny stub the size of only a leaf, and this process, with proper care, then gave good growth. Now, at the beginning of November, it is already a ten-centimeter bush. So, maybe I will still manage to take a photo of Strawberries with Cream!

And the other "Vanka-wet", or rather the balsam of Waller Safari F1, grew by leaps and bounds, and even with roots twisted in a pot gave a good flowering. And I also forgot to water it from time to time, which is why it drooped with its leaves, but even because of this, it was not "offended" and did not dry out. I took him to the dacha only at the end of June. He grew up in partial shade, right in a pot. After heavy rainstorms with a powerful wind, he was always overturned, but even that was nothing to him. Well, it turned out to be a very unpretentious flower!

Figure: 8. "Vanka-wet", aka "Safari", in August

After the summer season, the life of my begonias and balsams continued at home on the windowsill. Until November, I continued to feed them with the same liquid fertilizer "Begonia", there is no need for further. In September, they still bloomed well:

Figure: 9. Begonia ever-flowering pink and white at the end of September

And in October-November there were fewer and fewer flowers. But I like in begonia not only flowers, but also its dark red leaves, especially the unusual color of the leaves is expressed in the pink and red species of begonia. White leaves are slightly greener.

Until now, I have a memory of summer on my windowsill, and I'm already waiting for January to plant new types of these unpretentious flowers.

Indoor balsam: photo and description of flowers

The Balsamin genus has over 500 species of annual and perennial herbaceous plants of the balsam family. Its homeland is the tropics and sub-tropics of Asia and Africa, some species are found in Central Asia.

As a houseplant it has been known for a very long time and is invariably popular. Probably the most popular plant in the world. The first of these flowers were brought to Europe in 1596. Due to its unpretentiousness, year-round flowering and ease of reproduction, this cute plant has been loved for more than four hundred years. Many of its popular names are known: touch-me-not, light, Vanka wet, ever-flowering.

Stems are juicy, branched, 15 to 50 cm high in different varieties. Leaves are green, reddish-green or bronze, wavy at the edges, fleshy. With increasing humidity, droplets of liquid appear on the tips of the leaves, for which the plant is called Vanka-wet.

As you can see in the photo, in indoor balsam, flowers are located in the axils of the leaves:

They are white, pink, orange, red, purple, and also with stripes or specks. Hybrids with double flowers and multi-colored leaves were bred. The flowers are small, but very bright, reminiscent of lights, hence the name "light".

With proper planting and caring for indoor balsam after flowering, the plant produces green fruits, which, after ripening, form a dry box with seeds. Even from a light touch, it "explodes" and scatters seeds. The popular name "touchy" apparently stuck precisely because of this feature of the plant.

Look at the photo - balsam indoor flowers bloom very abundantly almost all year round:

Grown as an annual plant for balconies and gardens, as well as a perennial, unpretentious houseplant.

Intensive selection work has made it possible to breed many hybrids and varieties of indoor balsam, differing in height, flower color and size, and leaf color.

Below you will find a description, photo and video of balsamic care at home, as well as advice on growing plants from seeds.

Growing indoor balsam from seeds

Before growing indoor balsam from seeds, they should be placed in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 10 minutes, and then soaked in warm water for a day. Next, you should start preparing the land for planting. Seedlings are very sensitive to the composition of the soil, which should be loose and slightly acidic. For this, a self-prepared mixture of equal parts of the following components is well suited: peat soil (2 parts); sheet land (1 part); vermiculite (1 part); river coarse sand (1 part). You can take ready-made soil for seedlings. But it is imperative to add one fifth of vermiculite or sand to it, which will make the soil loose and breathable. This will give the earth the opportunity to dry out faster, and weak seedlings will not die from excessive moisture.

To grow indoor balsam from seeds, a seedling container should be chosen about 7 cm in height or slightly larger. To do this, you can take a plastic container, a wide bowl or pot. It is necessary to make holes in the bottom of the container and provide it with a layer of expanded clay 2 cm thick. Such a precaution will not allow water to linger in the soil and save the seedlings from root rot. On the eve of sowing, you need to fill the container with earth and spill it with a solution of "Fitosporin", which improves the microflora of the soil and protects against such a serious problem as "black leg".

Pour fertile soil into a container for seedlings, moisten and compact it. Place the seeds at a distance of 2 cm from each other and sprinkle lightly with earth. Cover the planting with a plastic bag on top and put it in a bright place. If you want the seeds to sprout faster, illuminate the seedlings with a lamp.

A warm place and good lighting are essential for successful germination. However, the seedlings should be protected from direct sunlight. The optimum temperature for seed germination is from +22 to +25 ° C.

After about 3 weeks, the first shoots appear. During this time, it is important to adhere to the following actions: As often as possible, ventilate the crops and shake off the accumulated condensate from the "greenhouse" in order to protect the seeds from air stagnation and fungal infection. Moisten the soil from a spray bottle, avoiding both overdrying and waterlogging of the soil. Supplement the seedlings with a phytolamp in the morning, evening and on a cloudy day. When the first shoots appear, carefully sprinkle moist soil on the young bare roots.

When watering seedlings, it is important to ensure that water does not fall on the root collar of a young plant in order to avoid rotting. With proper care, seedlings develop quickly. When the first true leaves appear, you can dive the sprouts into separate containers. Small plastic cups are great for this. It is important not to forget to make drainage holes in them and put some expanded clay on the bottom. If the seedlings are too elongated due to a lack of light, when diving, the lower parts of the long stems should be deepened deeper.

It is recommended to hold the cups with seedlings in the "greenhouse" a little more, gradually accustoming them to fresh air. With sufficient light and regular watering, the seedlings become strong and stocky, starting to bush early. If young plants do not want to branch in any way, you need to pinch the tops for the active formation of side shoots. The more new shoots grow, the more luxuriant the bush will grow and the more abundantly it will bloom. When young plants grow noticeably and their roots are completely entwined with an earthen ball, you can transplant them into new permanent pots and wait for a bright scattering of delicate flowers to appear.

You can see a photo of growing a houseplant balsam from seeds below:

How to care for indoor balsam flower

Caring for a balsam houseplant is not at all difficult, since this flower is very unpretentious. The indoor balsam flower signals improper care by dropping the lower leaves on the stem. If you notice that the stems are bare, then this is a sign of improper care or that the plant is old and needs to be rejuvenated. But the culture does not die at the same time, and often even continues to bloom.

The flower will grow on any window and even somewhere in the corner, but for constant, abundant flowering, it needs a bright light for at least a few hours. It is better not to keep it on the southern window at the height of summer or shade it from the scorching rays. The east and west windows are well suited for caring for indoor balsam at home. Grows beautifully on the balcony in summer.

Pay attention to the photo of indoor balsam care - from spring to autumn, every 2 weeks the plants need to be fed with mineral fertilizer:

Excess nitrogen fertilization can provoke vigorous stem growth and inhibit flower formation.

Transplanted into a mixture for flowering plants. The pot is chosen close, almost the size of the root system, otherwise flowering in a large pot will be delayed.

Plants grown from the cuttings are not transplanted. Plants blooming from the beginning of spring by autumn lose their decorative effect, and they should be renewed by cuttings.

The day before the transplant, it is spilled abundantly with water. Gently remove from the old pot, remove the old soil from the roots, examine the roots.

As you can see in the photo, when caring for indoor balsam at home, damaged and dry roots, as well as rotten ones, are removed with a sharp scalpel or knife:

The cuts are ground with crushed coal and planted in a new pot, without deepening the root collar of the plant. The soil is lightly tamped at the stem of the flower. It is advisable to transplant quickly, without allowing the roots to dry out.

After transplanting, the flower is well watered and put in the shade for several days.

If the plant is young, then there can be several transplants a year, replacing each time the flowerpot with a larger one, simply transferring the plant and adding soil.

Pay attention to the photo - when caring for indoor balsam at home, when transplanting plants, it is planted in the center of the pot, not forgetting about the drainage layer:

Then the plant is watered and placed in the shade.

Planting and caring for indoor balsam in winter, pruning a flower (with photo)

When caring for balsam at home in winter, most species require a temperature of at least 12-14 degrees. At other times of the year - the usual room.

The air humidity is normal. If the air is too dry, the flowers fall off.

Moisture-loving plant. He has juicy, moisture-filled stems, with insufficient watering, the flower will not disappear, but it will lose its elasticity and can shed the lower leaves. In summer, watering is plentiful, the soil must always be moist, in winter watering is reduced, preventing the earthen coma from drying out. Stagnation of water in the sump is harmful, with an excess of moisture, root and stem rotting begins.

Unpretentious to the soil. Can grow in almost any nutrient and loose mixture.

Propagate very easily by cuttings of apical shoots and seeds. The seeds are quite large, they are usually sold in a mixture, they are sown in February-March in greenhouses or greenhouses. They germinate within 3-4 weeks at 23-25 ° C.

In early spring, it is necessary to prune the plant by cutting off the extended branches. Prune in several stages so as not to injure the plant. Increase watering and transplant the flower into new soil. Pinch the crown and ends of the branches of the plant so that the bush comes out more compact and branched.

If the roots appear through the drainage hole, this is a signal to transplant the plant into a more voluminous pot, that is, the balsam has already covered the entire lump of soil in the old pot with roots.

Photos of care and trimming of balsam at home will illustrate in detail how to perform this agrotechnical technique:

Pests of indoor balsam and their photos

They are affected by aphids and whiteflies; if the air is too dry, they can be affected by spider mites. In case of severe pest damage, balsam is sprayed with insecticides. Excess moisture contributes to the development of gray rot.

A spider mite often infects a plant, especially in hot, dry weather - in internodes, a cobweb appears on the stems.

As you can see in the photo, when balsam is damaged by this pest, the leaves become lethargic, pale and fall off:

The entire surface area must be rinsed in soapy water. To do this, dilute a cool soap solution in a bucket of warm water (you can use green soap, tar, and even foam for washing dishes). Then lower the plant upside down and leave for five minutes. Wash off the foam with warm clean water from the shower. Repeat the procedure in a week.

New Guinea hybrids are more warm and light-loving, so it is better to grow them in rooms and conservatories, but they also look good in flowerpots placed in sunny corners of the garden, sheltered from the wind, or on warm terraces. When caring for New Guinea balsam at home, systematic watering and feeding are required. Plants prefer a peat substrate.

Who is this "Vanka wet"?

Balsam is a favorite plant of many flower growers: unpretentious and pleasing to the eye with abundant flowering for a long time, with bright and varied shades of flowers that encourage breeders to collect whole collections of a pet.

Preparation for planting and the choice of planting material

Like many other flowers, it can be bred with seeds. There is an opinion that this is not an easy matter, but I do not share this opinion. How to properly plant balsam seeds at home? This is not difficult to do - the main thing is to choose high-quality seeds. When buying them, pay attention to the collection time (not production) and the expiration date. Give preference only to large manufacturing plants that have been selling their products for more than a year.

A way of assembling your own "seeds"

True flower growers can try to collect seeds from their favorite flower with their own hands. However, in order to do this you will have to try. To begin with, a flowering plant must be artificially pollinated; for this, collect the pollen with a cotton swab or brush and apply it to the pistils of the inflorescences. After the flower has faded, green fruits appear in its place, which, as they ripen, turn into a white oblong box with small seeds. They should be collected very carefully, since from any touch the box explodes and the seeds scatter in different directions. That is why balsam is popularly called "touchy". It is best to collect seeds early in the morning when the fruit is slightly damp. Try to gently pinch it with your fingertips so as not to loose the contents. Or try to outsmart the plant: for this, take a cloth (just not slippery), cover the fruit with it, when you touch it, the box will burst, and its contents will remain on the fabric.
After collecting, the seeds must be thoroughly dried. They are dried at a temperature of about + 30 degrees in a well-ventilated place, while avoiding direct sunlight.

Sowing seeds and their shoots

When growing hard to get from seeds, you need to take into account that the plant can lose its varietal characteristics, surprising you with an unexpected color of flowers. When is it better to plant balsam seeds for seedlings? Sowing should be started in the spring to get a mature bush by summer. Before planting, place the grains in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 10 minutes, then soak in warm water for a day.

The soil

While the seeds are softening, prepare the soil. It should be loose and slightly acidic. For this, a substrate consisting of 50% peat and 50% vermiculite or perlite is suitable. The use of perlite will make the earth loose, in addition, it will protect it from clumping, which will allow the root system to develop well, and vermiculite will save the plant from overheating and hypothermia.

Perlite and vermiculite - foamed and ground rock. They are known for their use in plant growing as an excellent regulator of soil moisture.

Before use, the substrate should be treated with fungicides - chemical preparations for the destruction of spores and bacteria that can serve as causative agents of various plant diseases.

In addition to the soil itself, the flower needs to prepare drainage, for this it is best to take expanded clay. Before use, expanded clay should be thoroughly rinsed under running water. Next, take a wide container about 10 cm high and make small holes in the bottom. First, fill in expanded clay approximately 1/5 of the height of the pot, and then the prepared soil. Drainage will prevent water from stagnating in the soil, preventing roots from rotting.

How to sow balsam with seeds

The earth and seeds are prepared, now it is worth starting to reproduce the handsome man. Planting balsam with seeds is very simple. Spread the seeds on top of the soil and sprinkle lightly with earth. Then thoroughly wet the crops with water at room temperature, for convenience, use a spray bottle. Try to place the seeds at a distance of two to three centimeters from each other so that the seedlings do not block the light of their "neighbor". In order to shorten the germination time, we will create a greenhouse, to do this, close the container with a plastic bag or glass, then put it in a well-lit place, but not under the scorching sun rays. The fastest germination occurs at an average temperature of 23 ° C. To maintain the required humidity, ventilate the greenhouse at least twice a day, and water it twice a week along the edge of the container or in the sump. Avoid stagnant water to avoid decay. The same actions are performed when sowing balsam seeds for seedlings.

When is it necessary to dive?

After two leaves are formed in young cuttings, they can be transplanted. For this, small peat pots or ordinary disposable cups are suitable.

Diving - transplanting plants into individual pots or their resolution with the deepening of a part of an elongated stem.

Do not forget to make a few holes in the bottom of the container and put a drain. If the sprouts are too elongated during germination, when picking the balsam, deepen the seedling more into the ground or pinch the top. However, with sufficient watering and light, the plant bushes well, and the stem becomes strong and stocky.
