It was all the more interesting to learn the preliminary results of the analysis of the work. The bulk of the participants in the RSU were women - 61%, men were one and a half times less - 39%. The geography of the participants included the cities of Ryazan, Sasovo and Skopin, as well as Ryazan, Rybnovsky, Zakharovsky, Mikhailovsky, Skopinsky, Spassky, Aleksandro-Nevsky, Shilovsky, Shatsky, Starozhilovsky, Chuchkovsky and Saraevsky districts.

School students accounted for 74.2% (545 people), students - 7.8%, working - 14.1%, pensioners - 2.9%. Students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Russian State University were busy organizing the event, and already participated in the online version of the Dictation, which is why these figures were not included. The age profile revealed the following picture: under 10 years old - two participants, 10-18 years old - 81%, 19–25 years old - 3%, 26–35 years old - 2%, 36–53 years old - 8.5%, 54–65 years old - 3%, over 65 years old - 1.5%.

Alexey Vodorezov, head of the Department of Physical Geography of the Russian State University, commented on the answers of the Ryazan people to some of the questions of the dictation.

The very first question of the dictation demanded to give a name to a point on the map, in relation to which the entire territory of Russia lies in the south. The answers of Cape Chelyuskin, Taimyr, Franz Josef Land are not correct, as well as "north". The only correct answer - the North Pole - was given by 51% of Ryazan residents. The meaning of the question is that being at the North Pole, the direction in any direction is the direction to the south, the concepts of north, west and east disappear altogether.

When asked about the river on which Sergei Yesenin and Ilya Muromets were born, the correct answer - Oka - instead of the expected 100% was given only by 95% of the participants: others were indicated in the answers of the Yenisei, Ob and Volga rivers.

A high percentage of correct answers - 81% - was given to the question about monsoons - winds of the Far East, which change direction twice a year.

More than 74% of Ryazan residents correctly indicated the natural zone where cloudberries and dwarf birch grow, reindeer and lemming live - the tundra zone (tundra and forest tundra). Some, however, inscribed taiga and steppe, and also confused the natural zone with a geographical zone, indicated the Arctic and Subarctic.

Undisputed interest in all thirteen involved classrooms of the university aroused the question of the people of Dagestan, numbering 470 thousand people, who became famous for the world famous dance. The answer forms included horsemen, "mountain people", Cossacks and Tuvans. Knowledgeable and sharp-witted - 45% of the participants - realized that by analogy with a gypsy girl and a polka, we are talking about the famous Lezginka - a folk dance of Lezgins.

The shallowest sea off the coast of Russia with a maximum depth of 15 meters is the Azov Sea, which was reflected in the responses of 70% of the participants. The mysterious city of the Golden Ring, known since the 11th century, with an armed bear on its coat of arms - Yaroslavl, as reported correctly by 52% of Ryazan residents. When choosing the most salty reservoir from the group of lakes Elton, Ilmen, Caspian and Azov seas, only 41% correctly pointed to the first - a natural storehouse of table salt in the Volgograd region, the ancient object of salt production - Lake Elton.

The analysis of the satellite image, in which it was proposed to recognize the river and choose a name from the four proposed, caused great difficulties. It required logic and observation. The picture looked like a mosaic of multi-colored rectangles - this is how arable land looks from a height, which immediately swept aside the options for the Ob and Pechora. The picture showed the mouth of the Don River at the confluence of the Sea of Azov. Only 40% of the participants answered this way.

Another question contained a picture: on a 1981 postage stamp with the inscription "300 years from the date of birth" there was a portrait of an adult man in a headdress; the question indicated that this was a navigator who glorified Russia on the Saint Gabriel boat. The answers of Columbus, Miklouho-Maclay and Barents were deliberately wrong. But 56% answered correctly, remembering Vitus Bering.

After checking the knowledge of depths, heights, dimensions and concepts, the participants got to the final group of questions, where excerpts from prose and poems of Russian classics contained a hint of a geographical object - a city or a river. The city on the Northern Dvina turned out to be Arkhangelsk (47% of correct answers), the image of the Terek River in Lermontov's lines turned out to be more complicated (36%). Well, the most difficult thing in the whole dictation turned out to be the image of the southern city, where the winter wind of the bora freezes ships into the ice and knocks the sailors off their feet. Only 30% of participants in the dictation gave the correct answer Novorossiysk.

An analysis of the results of the dictation will give an understanding of the gaps in the knowledge of Russians about the nature, resources, population and economic imbalances of the largest country in the world, which will make it possible to make adjustments to educational programs, think over a strategy for the development of school geographic education to form the personality of young Russians, patriots of their homeland, - summed up Alexey Vodorezov.

About dictation

We remind you that an educational action aimed at testing the geographical literacy of Russians - the second All-Russian geographical dictation, took place on November 20, 2016.

1,700 institutions came up with the initiative to hold it. As a result, the dictation was organized at more than 1,500 venues. The Russian Geographical Society prepared three options for assignments, each of which consisted of 30 questions.

One of the main principles of the campaign was anonymity. On the forms of tasks and answers, it was possible not to indicate your name. Participants were asked to write only age, occupation, attitude to geography (for example, a student or teacher of a specialized university) and some other information. This information is necessary in order to assess and analyze the level of geographical knowledge of the inhabitants of our country.

The geographic dictation could be completed not only in person, but also online on the dictant website.

The first All-Russian Geographical Dictation was held on November 1, 2015. A large-scale educational action was aimed at assessing the level of geographical literacy of the population of the Russian Federation. It was initiated by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Society, Vladimir Putin, and the organizer was the Russian Geographical Society.

How many people have written?

Anyone could take part in the dictation, regardless of age, education and field of activity. As a preliminary analysis of the works shows, the number of male and female participants is almost the same. And the most active were young people aged 11-18.

The online dictation was written by about 95 thousand people, which is three times more than last year. According to preliminary data, the number of full-time participants in the action has almost doubled: about 85 thousand people passed the geographic test. The number of regional sites has grown more than 7 times.

The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) became the absolute leader in the number of dictation writers. In second place is the Republic of Bashkortostan. Third place goes to Moscow. The capital is slightly inferior to the Voronezh region and St. Petersburg. The largest platform, where 1,771 people simultaneously wrote the dictation, operated at Voronezh State University.

Tasks

The dictation was compiled in three versions for the regions of Central Russia, Siberia and the Far East. Each task included 30 questions, which were conditionally divided into three blocks. The first consisted of questions on knowledge of geographic concepts and terms; the second was aimed at testing knowledge about the location of geographical objects on the map; the third offered to recognize the geographical object by fragments from works of art.

Among the questions that caused the least difficulty in the first version was the question of winds that change direction to the opposite twice a year and largely determine the climate of the Far East (monsoons). Also, most of the participants correctly answered the question about clouds of vertical development, which are associated with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hail, squally wind (cumulonimbus, cumulus). The most difficult question was to identify a pair of objects that are not geographically related to each other. Instead of the Onega River and Lake Onega (the river is located in the Arkhangelsk Region, its name is not associated with Lake Onega, and their water systems are not communicated), the choice fell on the Okhota River and the Sea of Okhotsk (the Okhota River flows through the territory of the Okhotsk region of the Khabarovsk Territory and flows into the Okhotsk sea). The question of knowledge of the geographical map, in which it was required to arrange mountain systems in ascending order of their maximum absolute height, was also not easy for many.

In the second version, almost everyone correctly named solid atmospheric precipitation that falls in the warm season (hail) and the conditional line dividing the surface of the globe into the Northern and Southern hemispheres (equator). Only a fourth of all the participants who wrote the second version were able to recognize the symbolic swamp sign found on topographic maps of Western Siberia.

Great difficulties arose over the name of the federal district, on the territory of which the northernmost mainland point of Russia (Siberian) is located.

For the third option, the most simple question was also from the block "geographical concepts", in which it was required to name the water droplets deposited on the surface of plants in the night and morning hours (dew). Most of the participants correctly answered the question about the subject of the Russian Federation, where there is a subtropical Mediterranean climate (the Republic of Crimea). The two most difficult questions related to the date line and the definition of the Udege people by description.

Estimates

According to preliminary data, the average score of the participants since last year, unfortunately, has not changed, and this is a three - 52 points out of 100.

The data will still be refined and corrected, and as of today, 413 people have scored 100 points out of all those who passed the dictation in person.

About 3.5 thousand participants received from 90 to 99 points.

Less than 30 points were scored by every fifth participant of the action.

We asked participants from different regions of our country to share their impressions of the large-scale educational campaign of the Russian Geographical Society.

Students

Schoolchildren from different cities of Russia shared their opinion about the dictation.

Alexander Tusikov, Moscow, gymnasium 1534, 6th grade:

- In general, I liked the dictation! I also wrote last year, this year he is even better. The questions were interesting, but I, of course, did not answer all of them. "

Elena Popova, Natasha Langman, Moscow, 7th grade:

- Some of the questions were easy, some quite difficult. The difficult question is where to define the city by description. But it seems to us that we did it!

Islam Batalov, 13 years old, Moscow, 7th grade student:

- I really enjoyed participating in the Geographic Dictation. It was difficult to answer questions related to mining. I am fond of geography and would like to take part in the dictation next year.

Kamilya Yanbulatova, Kuznetsk-12, Penza region, school named after A.N. Radischeva, 11th grade:

- The questions were at the level of the modern school curriculum, however, in order to answer them correctly, you need to study in more depth. In my opinion, the most difficult question was number 28, where it was necessary to name the river about which the poem by M.Yu. Lermontov. Here, at the same time, one must know well the literature. In general, the impression of the dictation is good.

Alena Radygina, Penza, Provincial Lyceum, 7th grade:

- The dictation was rather difficult, and I could not answer some questions. Some questions deviated from the school curriculum, but it seems to me, since we have not passed it yet. The difficult questions were those related to literature. "

Akhmetov Daniyar, schoolboy, Kurgan region:

I participate in the All-Russian Geographical Dictation for the first time. The dictation questions seemed average in terms of difficulty. I like to travel and this is largely due to my interest in geography. But alas, there is not enough time for long trips. Dictation is interesting for me, so maybe in the future I will connect my life with geography.

Geography teachers also took part in the dictation.

Vera Patrikovna, geography teacher, Moscow:

- I am writing the dictation for the second time. This year, in my opinion, it is no less interesting than last. Some questions are difficult to answer without a map. These are tasks where you need to arrange the soils in the required sequence. It is just wonderful that the questions of the dictation are complex: to answer them correctly, knowledge is required not only in the field of geography, but also in history and literature.

Natalya Alekseevna Rovinskaya, geography teacher at secondary school 38 in Crimea:

- I have come to write a dictation for the second year already. I learned about the dictation on the RGS website. I try to take part in all actions and competitions of the Russian Geographical Society and involve children in this. Every year I feel more and more interest of children in the study of Russian geography and geography in general ... Although I am a teacher with forty years of experience, I am always interested in testing my own knowledge.

Tatyana Koroleva, geographer, Kurgan region:

I took part in full-time writing of the All-Russian Geographical Dictation. Last year I wrote the dictation online on the Russian Geographical Society website. In my opinion, the level of questions this year was no less interesting than a year ago. Questions from different areas of geography. The most difficult question seemed to be about the city of Petrovsk, which was later renamed.

People of different ages and professions tested their knowledge.

Maxim Kolbasyuk, Sergeant of the Novosibirsk Higher Military Command School:

- It was interesting to take part in such a dictation. Honestly, the questions did not cause any particular difficulties, almost 80%, I spent less time than expected. I hope I will show a decent result. "

Ruslan, smm manager, Moscow:
- I was confused by questions related to soils and peaks. The rest of the tasks this year were easier to answer than last.

Volunteers of the All-Russian Geographical Dictation about why they decided to take part in this action:

Anton Yurmanov, Moscow

- While studying at the Faculty of Geography, I take part in most of the projects of the Russian Geographical Society, where the help of volunteers is required. I could not help but take part in the work of the geographical dictation, especially on the main site - at my university, since it is extremely important to instill an interest in geography in people, even those who are far from it.

Olga Koroleva, Moscow

- Why did I become a volunteer during the All-Russian Geographical Dictation? Yes, simply because I like everything related to the activities of the Russian Geographical Society. I wanted to see how the event is organized, to look inside, to meet people who are trying to raise the level of geography in our country, and just put a piece of myself into a noble cause. I was very pleased, it was a pleasure to work hard. "

Alexey Starshinov, Moscow:

"Who, if not us, the students of the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University, should help in holding this event and educate our youth, promote geography to the masses"

Gleb Mamyrkin, Moscow:

- The regions of Russia are a very important topic, especially now, because they are very differently developed. It is necessary to involve people from school, people of different ages, to instill a love for geography, and, perhaps, some percentage of them will go to the Faculty of Geography. "

Simakova Tatiana, student of Kurgan State University

This year I take part in the Dictation for the second time. Last year I was a participant, and today I work as a volunteer for an educational campaign. The dictation questions seemed to me diverse and interesting.

The Russian Geographical Society thanks all the participants of the Geographical Dictation and the volunteers who helped in the All-Russian Geographical Dictation!
