Changes in the Unified State Exam in 2018 in Social Studies in comparison with 2017

The grading system for assignment 28 has been revised. The maximum score has been increased from 3 to 4.

The wording of task 29 has been detailed and the assessment system has been changed. The maximum score has been increased from 5 to 6.

Maximum primary score for completing all work increased from 62 to 64.

The examination paper consists of two parts, including 29 tasks.

Part 1 contains 20 tasks with a short answer.

Part 2 contains 9 tasks with a detailed answer.

The answers to the tasks of part 1 are a word (phrase) or a sequence of numbers.

The tasks of part 2 (21–29) require a complete answer (give an explanation, description or justification; express and argue their own opinion).

The time spent on examinations in social studies is 3 hours 55 minutes (235 minutes).

Table 1

Distribution of tasks by parts of the examination work

Part of work Number of tasks Max. primary score The percentage of the maximum primary score for completing tasks of this part of the maximum primary score for all work, equal to 64 Job type
Part 1 20 35 54,7 With a short answer
Part 2 9 29 45,3 With a detailed answer
Total 29* 64 100

* The last (29th) task of the work consists of five alternative tasks.

In each variant of work in tasks 21–28, five thematic blocks-modules are presented in total.

Alternative task 29 concludes, directing the examiner to write a mini-essay on one of the five suggested topics.

Topics are set in the form of short statements by representatives of public thought, politicians, scientists and cultural figures. In some cases, the statements are aphoristic in nature. Each topic-statement is conditionally correlated with one of the basic sciences of the social science course (topics in sociology and social psychology are combined into a common block), however, graduates have the right to reveal it in the context of any social science or several sciences.

This task tests a wide range of skills, in particular, to reveal the meaning of the author's judgment, to involve the studied theoretical positions of the social sciences, to independently formulate and concretize their reasoning with examples, to draw conclusions.

Social Studies is one of the most popular elective subjects on the Unified State Exam, but at the same time, one of the most controversial. It is with this direction that the largest number of disapproving responses from examiners is associated. On the one hand, this situation is due to the fact that the certificate in social studies is accepted by a huge number of various universities in the country. On the other hand, it is this subject that is often chosen by graduates who, before the start of the graduation campaign, could not decide on their future specialty and often did not bother preparing for exams.

So, let's try to understand the most important issues of concern to the graduates of the 2017-2018 academic year, namely:

The most popular combination of the Unified State Exam "Russian language + mathematics + social studies" opens up a wide range of areas for the future applicant. With high scores in these subjects, you can compete for budget places at faculties:

  • pedagogy;
  • psychology;
  • economics;
  • sociology;
  • management;
  • service;
  • personnel management;
  • state management;
  • commodity science;
  • business informatics;
  • economic security.

Please note that to enter a number of the listed areas, a prerequisite is the delivery of the profile level! You should check the information on the official website of your chosen university.

If the points gained do not allow you to enter one of the best universities in Russia, you can consider the prospect of studying in colleges, which also accept grade 11 graduates on the basis of the results of a unified state exam.

When will the exam in social studies be held in 2018

To date, only the preliminary dates for the USE 2018 have been announced.

  • Those eligible for early passing of the exam can be guided by the start date of the preliminary stage of the exam - 03/21/18.
  • The main session of the exams starts on May 28 and must end by July 9, 2018.
  • Additional numbers for social studies tests will be announced after the start of the school year.

Possible Changes to 2018 Social Studies Tickets

Since the cardinal changes introduced in 2017 were successfully tested and received a lot of positive feedback, both from teachers and from the examinees themselves, we can expect that the format of tickets for 2018 will be very close to that which was handed over in the previous season.

You should not be guided by the materials and manuals for the USE 2016 and earlier in preparation, since they do not correspond to the new CMMs. Last year, the following significant changes were made to the structure of tickets and tasks themselves:

  1. Traditional single-answer tests have been removed from tickets entirely.
  2. All tasks were combined into thematic blocks, which should make it easier to navigate the topics.
  3. There is no exact number of correct answers in the descriptions of the tasks. Now there can be 2 or 3 of them.
  4. A system of primary and secondary points was introduced when calculating the result of the exam, according to which 62 primary points correspond to 100% of the tasks being completed.
  5. For correct answers, the examinee can receive from 1 to 3 points, and for a correctly written mini-essay, a maximum of 5 primary points.
  6. The minimum passing score in social studies will be 43 resulting points.
  7. The exam lasts 235 minutes, during which it is necessary to cope with 29 tasks of various difficulty levels.

The system for translating the primary score into the USE result is as follows:

Primary

Result

Primary

Result

For each primary point from 17 to 46, only 1 resulting point is added.

The ticket is divided into 2 parts:

  1. Short answer tasks.
  2. Tasks with a detailed answer and a short essay (mini-essay).

Despite the seeming ease at first glance, in order to pass the USE successfully and get in social studies not just a passing pass, but a competitive high score, graduates of 2018 will need thorough preparation.

How to prepare for the exam in the subject of social studies

The secret of successfully passing the unified state exam is really simple:

  • Training on effective methods, started in a timely manner (at 10 or early 11 grade).
  • Good textbooks on social studies and manuals for preparing for the exam, which will take into account all the changes adopted in 2018.
  • Practice and practice again in solving typical tasks from the USE tickets for 2017 and 2018.

The social studies exam is aimed at testing knowledge in the following 5 blocks:

  1. economy;
  2. right;
  3. politics;
  4. sociology (social relations);
  5. philosophy (man and society).

Each of the blocks is equally important to achieve the desired high score, and therefore you will have to process a fairly large amount of information and learn to:

  • confidently operate with basic concepts;
  • analyze information presented in the form of tables and graphs;
  • work quickly with the text (insert missing words, highlight the main thing, look for quotes that express certain thoughts);
  • supplement the texts using their own knowledge of social studies;
  • reason and give examples within the given problem;
  • solve cognitive tasks, arguing the chosen course of the solution;
  • briefly and concisely express your thoughts in writing, based on the basic concepts of the subject.

From school textbooks on social studies in 2017-2018, preference should be given to the authors: Bogolyubov, Bordovsky or Nikitin. Also, for preparation, it is worth finding textbooks on law (Bogolyubov and Pevtsova), on economics (Lipsits or Kireev). For those who want to delve into the subject in order to get the highest possible score, it will not be superfluous to familiarize yourself with textbooks of the profile level, which raise serious issues of economics, sociology and law.

For many graduates, the greatest challenge is the mini-essay. We suggest watching a video lesson that tells everything about how to write an essay on social studies correctly. The video was filmed 4 years ago. But, the requirements for this type of tasks have not changed, and therefore the tips given in it are relevant in 2018.

The Unified State Exam in Social Studies can be safely called the most popular among elective exams. Firstly, most of the schoolchildren consider this test simple, especially in comparison with the exact sciences. And secondly, a certificate with points for social studies is required for humanitarian and social profiles. Among the most demanded specialties are political science, sociology, cultural studies, law, psychology, economics, pedagogy, personnel management and management.

Many eleventh graders believe that this USE can be passed without preparation, having determined the correct answers on the basis of a logical approach, and in part of the essay simply expressing their thoughts. Let's say right away that such a mistake cost many students a huge number of points. Social studies is a subject in which a simple knowledge of terminology is not enough. Only the ability to correctly operate with concepts and an understanding of the deep essence of social, legal and philosophical concepts will help you successfully pass this USE.

In addition, the state examination in social studies presupposes a set of a fairly high primary score, and in recent years, tests with a choice of one answer from several proposed options have been completely removed from tickets. However, all this is not a reason for panic! You just need to figure out what requirements are put forward by the members of the commission when evaluating the work, and also find out in time everything about the changes in the CMMs of 2018.

Demonstration version of the exam-2018

Dates of the exam in social studies

Rosobrnadzor will publish the final dates for the USE in social studies only in January, however, in preparation for the USE, schoolchildren can focus on the approximate periods of time allotted for testing:

  • the early stage of the exam will take place from mid-March to mid-April and starts on 03/22/2018;
  • the main examinations will begin at the end of May (05/28/2018) and will last until early June 2018;
  • the period for the additional delivery of the exam is scheduled for September 2018. Most likely, it will be possible to retake subjects from September 4, 2018.

Let us remind you that you can apply for the USE ahead of schedule:

  • schoolchildren who graduated from a general education institution (regular or evening school, lyceum, gymnasium) before the 2017/2018 academic year;
  • conscripts who decided to serve in the ranks before entering the university;
  • students entering a foreign university, changing their place of residence or coming to study from abroad;
  • children leaving for national or international competitions, contests and competitions of a sports, cultural or scientific nature. In this case, you will need not only an application, but a call to the training camp (or an invitation to an event) indicating the exact dates of its holding and the name of the student;
  • schoolchildren who need treatment, recovery or rehabilitation on the dates of the main exam. In this case, a document issued by a medical board or commission must be attached to the application.

USE statistics in social studies

In 2017, 318 thousand students chose social studies for themselves, i.e. about half of all schoolchildren who took the exam. However, after the exam was made more difficult, the number of those wishing to take social studies decreased markedly - back in 2016 there were 40.4 thousand more such students. We also note that the share of children who could not score even the minimum passing score on this USE decreased markedly: in 2017, there were about 13.8% of such unsuccessful students, which is 3.3% lower than the level of 2016.

Nevertheless, in 2013 only 5.3% of students failed to pass this USE, and in 2011 - 3.9%. Teachers explain this by the fact that a few years ago schools began to abandon the practice of profile study of social science, although it is mandatory for admission to 1/3 of Russian universities. The tasks become more difficult, and in the school curriculum social studies only take 1-2 lessons per week. Nevertheless, with an average score of 59.5-60.0, the number of children who scored the maximum points is growing - last year there were about 500 such gifted graduates.

When passing the USE in social studies, the failure rate is quite high - 13.8%

Social Studies Exam Regulations

In 2018, students will receive 235 minutes to complete the exam card tasks. The regulations strictly prohibit bringing any foreign objects with you into the examination room. These include not only cheat sheets, but also smartphones, cameras, headphones, tablets, smart watches and any other equipment. And don't think that you can use any of the above list if you go to the toilet or infirmary! It will be possible to leave the audience only with an observer.

Remember: you can be taken out of the classroom and the test result canceled if you not only cheat, but also change seats, consult with neighbors, or turn your head to spy on someone else's work. About 20,000 supervising teachers will keep order in the examination rooms, and hardly anyone can hide from their watchful eyes.

Structure and content of the ticket

This discipline studies all sorts of aspects of the life of modern society. Students will have to demonstrate their knowledge in the following sections:

  • "Human and society"... This section studies the biosocial evolution of people, modern society, factors and stages of socialization, the principles of the functioning of society and the place of the individual in social relations;
  • "Social relations" - here it will be necessary to demonstrate an understanding of the problems of interaction between various social groups, knowledge in the field of conflict management and the systemic structure of modern society;
  • "Economy" - one of the most difficult blocks of the exam. Students will have to show their skills in reading charts, knowledge in the field of entrepreneurship and market economy, the ability to calculate economic indicators and analyze information;
  • "Right". This section will require you to be able to operate with the laws of the Russian Federation, an understanding of various branches of law and the specifics of regulating legal relations, including the basic rules and mechanisms;
  • "Politics". In this section, you need to demonstrate an understanding of modern government, political regimes and institutions.

In KIMs in social studies there are no tasks for choosing one answer from the options provided. Basic-level assignments will test the ability of students to recognize, reproduce, extract, classify, organize and compare information, assess it and explain trends. In tasks of an increased level of complexity, you will need to show your skills in complex cognitive activities. The ticket, consisting of 29 tasks, is structurally presented in two parts:

  • part 1 - consists of 20 tasks for which you need to give a short answer in the form of a word, a few words or numbers. 10 tasks refer to the basic level of difficulty, 10 more tasks - to the increased one. For this part of the work, you can collect 35 primary points, which is 54.7% of all points for the test;
  • part 2 - consists of 9 tasks, for which you need to give a detailed answer. Tasks numbered 21 and 22 are basic, and numbers 23 to 29 are tasks with increased difficulty. For this part, you can get 29 points (45.3% of all points). This part also includes writing a small essay on one of 5 topics given by the student's choice.

Innovation in new CMMs

The social studies exam did not undergo significant changes in the content, however, some structural points were optimized.

  1. Changed the grading system for task number 28;
  2. The wording of the task at number 29 was revised, changes were made to the system of its assessment;
  3. The maximum number of primary points per ticket has been increased by 2 points and is now 64.

Preparation for the Unified State Exam in Social Studies includes the development of a number of disciplines. Among them are political science, economics, sociology and law.

How do points translate into grades for a certificate?

In 2018, the points obtained for the exam will have an impact on the final grade in the certificate. Students who want to go to college or simply raise their GPA should be well prepared for the exam. The distribution and transfer of points are made as follows:

  • 0-41 points scored on the Unified State Exam means that the student “wiped his pants” throughout the entire study. These points are equal to the grade "unsatisfactory";
  • 42-54 points indicate satisfactory knowledge. The graduate deserves a mark at the level of the school "troika";
  • 55-66 points is a good result, which is equivalent to a “good” mark;
  • 67 points and above mean that the student has passed the subject with excellent marks.

The minimum score you need to score to pass the test is 42, which is equal to 19 primary points. The experience of past years has shown that for this it is necessary to solve at least 13 basic tasks. The maximum number of points for the Unified State Exam is 100. As the statistics of last year show, in order to enter the university, you need to score at least 55 points in this subject. Alas, this does not guarantee you budget receipts. Only applicants who have a certificate with 84 points or more can apply for budget places at prestigious universities.

How to prepare for the exam?

Experts from FIPI say that the first thing that should be paid attention to when preparing is knowledge and understanding of the terms of such disciplinary blocks as economics, philosophy, law, sociology and political science. Very often the student cannot solve the task correctly, because he does not correlate it with a certain scientific field, while using the wrong method of analysis.

Another important point is the choice of methodological and educational sources. Today, many authors are trying to make money by publishing materials to prepare for the Unified State Exam in certain subjects. But do not rush to buy everything! Choose books published in 2015-2017 and recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. FIPI experts recommend using the developments of L.N. Bogolyubov and A.I. Kravchenko.

Be sure to take the time to study the demo version of the Unified State Exam - this will help you understand the structure of the ticket, understand the requirements of examiners and reduce the time spent working with a real ticket. You can download the demo version of the Unified State Exam in Social Studies by following the links at the beginning of the article. In addition, specialists from the educational department determined the amount of time it would take to solve each of the proposed tasks:

  • tasks numbered 1-3 and 10 are solved on average in 1-4 minutes;
  • tasks numbered 4-9 and 11-28 require 2 to 8 minutes;
  • for task 29, you need to leave about 45-55 minutes.

What should be considered when preparing an essay?

Practice your essay writing more often to create a decent essay

Writing a short essay is an exam task that causes the greatest difficulties for schoolchildren. This is because it requires both fundamental knowledge of the subject, and the ability to competently and beautifully express your thoughts. You can write a mini on one of the five topics suggested in the ticket. The topic is formulated in the form of a statement made by a well-known representative in the field of public activity, politics, science or culture. When writing an essay, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • leave at least 50 minutes for this part of the work;
  • do not write a full-fledged essay on a draft - no one checks this form anyway. If you get too carried away with the rough work, then you may not have enough time to rewrite the text. Just jot down the thesis, which you then put together into a whole;
  • do not rush to choose a topic - take only the one that will be easier for you to argue;
  • it is important to immediately determine which branch of knowledge your chosen topic represents. Students are not forbidden to express their thoughts, relying on several social sciences, but examiners do not like very much when essays are written in vague phrases and generalized formulations;
  • don't forget to make an introduction. It should focus on the urgency of the problem;
  • demonstrate your knowledge by briefly describing the author of the statement. Describe other approaches to this problem, indicate alternative points of view or provide supportive statements;

The authors of the assignments are leading specialists who are directly involved in the development of methodological materials for preparing for the implementation of control measuring materials for the exam.
Typical test tasks in social studies contain 14 options for sets of tasks, compiled taking into account all the features and requirements of the Unified State Exam in 2018.
