How to make a woodpile in the country. We make firewood sheds and woodpiles with our own hands. How to make a woodpile with your own hands

Correctly and beautifully stacked firewood is the key to a hot fire. In an ideal woodpile, they will not get wet, will not disappear, and will not lose their hot properties.

Dry firewood . If damp firewood is stacked, it will dry in the woodpile, and the combustion efficiency of such firewood will become much higher.

There are fewer problems with kindling. Dry wood ignites easily and simply in a stove or fireplace.

Is it possible to stack wet firewood? It’s possible, but when they dry out, slender stacks may become distorted. And a beautiful woodpile - to fall over.

We save useful space. Compact placement of firewood on the site will allow you to collect a fairly decent amount of it, while the chaotic method will be quite voluminous in appearance, but small in the amount of stacked firewood. If you need to store a large amount of firewood, only a woodpile will help.

Aesthetic moment. Plus - beautiful wood walls and woodpiles - a real decoration of the site, a full-fledged element of the landscape design of a dacha, village, or country house.

In other words, it’s worthwhile to stack the firewood correctly and beautifully. In the end, we will not only receive aesthetic pleasure from the sight of neatly stacked firewood, but also a lot of benefits during the heating season.

Parallel method of stacking firewood - in stacks

The idea is simple - you can lay each new layer parallel to the previous one.

In this case, the wall of firewood should touch the previous wall. those. When placing firewood in the second wall, push it all the way - its inner end should touch the previous wall.

Each wall is laid with a slight inward slope. This slope is achieved by selecting uneven firewood.

An outward slope is unacceptable, even slight. As you gain height, the external distortion will intensify and the entire wall will collapse.

We do not extend each wall to the top until we adjust the next one. For stability. that is, we simultaneously lay out several walls with steps.

It turns out very economically and clearly; a large amount of firewood can be placed on a relatively small piece of land.

Perpendicular method - cage

The firewood is laid perpendicular to the previous row.

If you plan to stack firewood in this way, it is advisable to cut it longer. Smooth firewood is naturally easier to stack.

Circular method

Firewood stacked in a circle dries well. Especially if you leave the ventilation columns of empty space inside the stack.

Ideally, piled firewood does not flow, but achieving such a density of the top layer of firewood is not easy - that’s why novice craftsmen usually cover the firewood with additional waterproof material.

We offer photos of beautiful woodpiles! From the photo you can easily understand how the firewood was stacked. There are usually no difficulties.

Most of our country is heated by wood stoves. If not at home, then at the dacha or in the bathhouse you definitely need firewood. But firewood is bought raw and needs to be dried somewhere. To do this, they are put in woodpiles or special sheds are built - woodsheds or woodsheds (they say differently in different regions). The design is simple and making a woodshed with your own hands is not a difficult task.

What are there

A sheet of metal will protect walls from woodworms (wooden ones, of course)

If you do not pay attention to the size, there are two types of sheds for firewood - attached to the wall of a building or standing separately. It is clear that it is easier and faster to install, but this is not always possible. Or rather, not with all buildings: it is dangerous to build on wooden walls. And not only from a fire safety point of view. With the firewood comes a whole army of wood-boring beetles, which will happily take on your home. Therefore, it is better not to attach woodsheds to wooden buildings, even with wood treated with bioprotection, but if you really want to, then nail an iron sheet to the wall. As in the photo. It should be larger than the size of the woodcutter. Then all the bugs (most of them, for sure) will remain in the firewood.

Free-standing firewood sheds can be completely open - several pillars, a couple of lintels and a roof. The main thing is that the roof is large enough: it is advisable to make larger overhangs. And the rest will be completed by air and sun. They say that they dry no worse than in more closed structures. In regions with heavy snowfall, to prevent snow from getting inside for the winter, sheets of plywood are attached (attached) below. They are removed in the spring.

How are walls made?

More often, woodsheds are built with lattice or slotted walls. It is better if the boards are stuffed at some angle - like blinds. Then, even with oblique winds, little precipitation gets inside. But even if the boards are filled at some intervals, everything dries well.

Boards/slats are placed on the frame mostly horizontally, sometimes vertically; they also make lattices from thin planks or place them diagonally. In any case, there should be a lot of cracks for ventilation.

Vertically stuffed planks are rare. This is a woodshed with a pitched roof

Does the drying speed depend on the method of installing the planks? No comparisons have been made, so it’s difficult to say for sure. But one owner claims that if you lay the boards diagonally (he has 10 cm with a 2 cm gap), with each wall in a different direction, it dries faster and faster: in a month.

About the size of the slots: they are made from 2 cm to 10 cm. But it also depends on the width of the board. If you leave the gaps very wide, snow will sweep in a lot. If there is little snow or you are not concerned about the amount of snow, you can fill the boards less often. It's also more economical.

Beautiful woodshed for the dacha

Not all woodsheds have doors (those with doors are also called “woodsheds”), as in the version in the photo. Often there is not even a front wall: this allows for more active ventilation. The front wall and doors are needed if stealing occurs in your area, but in general you can do without them.

Log location

Now a little about the structure of the woodshed. If it is small and everything fits in one row, then there are no special problems - everything is accessible. But if large volumes are loaded, it is better to divide the area into sectors into which batches of firewood will be loaded. Thus, previously imported and already dried out ones will not be covered by fresh ones.

It is better to divide the area into sections, so that you can go inside

If the woodshed is square, arrange the sections so that you can reach inside to remove the driest logs. To do this, a passage is left in the middle. In terms of depth, it should not be up to the wall, but it is advisable that only one, or maximum two, rows of logs separate you from the wall (and in general it depends on the volume) - this way they will all be accessible. It’s easier with rectangular ones: they are simply separated by non-sectors by a partition. For example, as in the photo.

This is a large shed for firewood - each section fits one car - about 4 cubic meters. The back wall is not solid; if you look closely, there are holes there.

And a little about height. You don’t need a large woodcutter for a (seasonal) dacha. All you need is one or two cubes for heating in the fall/spring, and even then only for the weekend. But if you have to heat a house, and even a bathhouse, you will have to build something solid. Then, regardless of the layout - long or square, the height is about 2 meters. With average height, you can load it almost to the ceiling. but there should be a ventilation gap at the top.

We build a woodshed with our own hands

In this section we will describe how the woodshed was built near the house. The construction and painting took three days “without stress.” It was built like a frame barn.

Materials

Internal dimensions are 1.8 * 3.7 m, the height of the front pillars is 2.45 m, the rear pillars are 2.2 m. The total volume is 13 cubic meters, but a maximum of two cars are loaded - no more than 10 cubic meters. Moreover, they leave paths inside - to make it easier to take, they don’t load it to the top - not everyone in the family is tall. If the load is full, it is advisable to install additional jibs so that the weight of the firewood does not squeeze out the sheathing boards.

The frame is made of timber - racks, the lower and upper trim are made of 100*100 mm timber. The timber is pre-impregnated with used machine oil. Everything was assembled end-to-end, with nails, and reinforced with corners on screws. For the supports, standard small foundation blocks 200*200*600 mm were purchased in the amount of 6 pieces.

Construction step by step

The beginning of the construction of the firewood shed is standard - leveling the site and aligning the blocks. If the soils are viscous (clay loams, black soil), it is better to make a sand and gravel bed. Dig small pits 20-25 cm deep, pour and compact crushed stone, and place blocks on top.

Leveling the site is the first step in building a woodshed

Two layers of roofing material are laid on the blocks, timber is laid on top. The harness does not connect with the support in any way. If you wish, you can drill holes and hammer in the studs.

First, we laid out the beams of the lower frame and fastened them with nails (80*3 mm). Then screws were screwed into the corners. The next step is installing the racks. They are placed in the corners and above the intermediate support. The rear pillars are shorter than the front ones - so that there is a roof slope. They, too, were first placed vertically (checked with a plumb line), and hammered in obliquely with nails - two on each side. Then they secured them with corners on screws - two per rack. If there are concerns, you can also screw/nail the plates to each rack from the outside.

The racks are attached to the bottom frame beam

The entrance to the woodshed is located in the center. Because of this, the racks are offset and not installed above the support block. As a result, there is a slight deflection. To eliminate it, place four blocks in the first row, taking into account that the middle will be occupied by the entrance. Especially if there are doors: they place a significant load on the racks, so they need support.

In front, the intermediate posts are not above the support

Once the posts are in place, it's time to assemble the roof. First I nailed the side boards at the top. They are installed on the same level with the upper trim of the rear, shorter part (seen in the photo below). They and the rafters are made of 50*100 mm boards, the lathing is made of 30*100 mm boards.

Corrugated sheets were used as roofing material, and the boards were laid flat under it. The roof overhangs are about 35 cm, the side projections are about the same. The size of the roof was selected so that there were no scraps: exactly four sheets were used.

Roofing felt is laid under the corrugated sheet to prevent condensation from dripping onto the firewood: the costs are small, but there are benefits. Ruberoid began to be laid from below, laid along the overhang. The next one goes in 10 cm. It turns out that the drop that fell at the top simply flows down without getting inside.

This is what a woodshed with a finished roof looks like

The next step is to lay the floor. It was made from a 100*40 mm board. They were laid with gaps of 2-3 cm. Next, the wall sheathing was nailed. It was decided to make a gap equal to the width of the board (100 mm). The boards were nailed down, two on each edge. The structure turned out to be well ventilated, however, with a side wind it gets heavily clogged with snow.

Do-it-yourself woodcutter is almost ready

The last stage is painting. Here, take any composition for wood with bio-protective properties: so that the bugs eat less. In this version it is painted with BioTex, rosewood color.

Ready for use after painting

That's it, the woodshed is built. You can repeat this: nothing complicated. The complexity of carpentry work is at the level of high school students. The most complex components are the roof, but it is made very simply.

Homemade woodsheds: photo

There are many more similar buildings. The differences are small, the principle is the same: the frame is covered with boards with different gaps. There are several examples that were built by the owners of dachas or private houses themselves.

Woodshed attached to a barn at the dacha

To build it, only two pipes were needed, which were dug into the ground and concreted. Two beams were then attached to them. Similar beams were installed on the wall of the barn. Boards were stuffed between them and the roof was secured (cuts of corrugated sheets). To prevent the firewood from lying on the ground, they placed bricks and a sheet of old plywood on them. To make such a canopy, you can use leftovers from construction or buy pallets and disassemble them. Just the right size.

A simple woodcutter for a summer house

The second canopy was made of the same type. It is further divided into sectors in which firewood of different sizes is stored. The foundation for this structure was also not made; the fertile layer was removed, covered with sand, and compacted. Paving slabs were laid. There are bars on it that serve as supports for the crossbars on which the firewood of the lower compartment lies. It turned out neat.

A small firewood shed for a summer house, divided into sectors

Standing separately

The slope of the roof is organized in an unusual way: the front pillars are made higher, there is nothing unusual about this. But there are grooves cut into them that hold the rafters of the pitched roof. That is, the roof does not rest on the top trim, as usual, but on the side pillars. With a light snow load, this design is quite viable; with heavy snow, the roof is unlikely to survive.

These are two about photos explaining the construction process

And this is what happened. The first serious construction is a woodshed with your own hands, and already it’s so good!

How to fold a round woodpile

You have probably seen firewood stacked in a cylindrical woodpile (or photo) many times. They look good, and, more importantly, the wood dries quickly in them.

Round woodpiles for drying firewood

Everything is very simple, but without knowing the secret it’s impossible to do it well. Below is a photo report that shows step by step how to fold a round log from chopped firewood.

First, dig in and securely fasten a pole about 2 meters high. Place small diameter logs around. The distance to the center is twice the length of the firewood (if the firewood is 40 cm, the distance to the center is about 80 cm).

The first step of laying a round woodpile

Next, lay out the chopped firewood. One end of them rests on the laid out logs, the other lies on the ground. Lay it so that everything lies almost end to end along the inner edge (with small gaps). There will be gaps on the outside. It's not scary - the second row will fit in them.

Lay out the first row

Place the second row on top of the first. Trying to fill in the gaps as much as possible. We begin to stack the firewood tightly around the pole while standing.

Continuation: lay out the second row, start filling the middle

We continue to stack the firewood in a circle and fill the middle

As soon as you notice that the outer edge of the firewood has begun to slope down, lay out a row in a circle that will raise it. Then you continue to stack the firewood in the same way: in a circle until half the height of the firewood (20 cm), then fill the middle. The second row in the middle is not just placed, but stuck into the cracks. Try to insert the pieces of wood tightly.

Continuation of the process

The same process can be repeated with more wood. Lay two or even three rows in a circle. The sizes of such firewood loggers can be enormous. The photo gallery shows an example of how to fold a large woodpile.

The construction of a round woodpile is a labor-intensive process and takes much more time, but the appearance of such a structure will bring aesthetic pleasure to the owner of the site. The presence of firewood is considered a significant help in a country house or country house. If the house itself is heated with gas, then logs are needed for heating in the bathhouse, lighting the barbecue and barbecue.

When the amount of firewood is quite impressive or there is simply nowhere to allocate space for storing it, the firewood can be stored in a cozy round woodpile either in the open area of the site, or a special woodshed can be built for it (storage under the roof).

If installed correctly, the appearance of this structure will be
t resemble a well-groomed haystack. The logs should be placed in a beveled position, this will allow precipitation to flow down them under unfavorable climatic conditions. Round firewood logs are becoming increasingly popular in Russia, especially in those areas where there is a lot of good wood and logs are often used to fire stoves and baths. In the United States, the round stacking method is also used. They just call this structure a “wooden house.”

The main advantage is that a very large amount of firewood takes on a beautiful appearance and is located in a fairly small area of the site, thereby bringing comfort to the owner of a private, country house or cottage. They dry out faster than firewood found in basements and other optimized storage areas. A significant plus is also the fact that the woodpile will not fall apart even in very strong winds if it is folded correctly. The round shape looks much more attractive than the usual rectangular one. Folding a round woodpile is quite easy, and most importantly, fun. The process itself will bring pleasure to the person who put together this structure.

If you are doing it for the first time, it is better to build a woodpile that is not too large. A well-ventilated place is chosen, one where there is a lot of sun.

At the initial stage, you need to lay out the ring and leave the central part empty. The result is a connected chain, the logs of which touch at the ends. The next layer is laid across the first, the slope is naturally oriented towards the middle. On the second layer, contact occurs with the side parts of the log, and not with the ends.

The center is free, gradually a pipe is formed in place of the center, which ensures the passage of air and rapid drying of the firewood. The rows may lose slope because the thickness of the logs varies. In this case, supports are installed along the edges, running across them - a ring that supports the edges of the first row. This will make the structure reliable and stable.

The rows of stakes, which are arranged crosswise, reach the same height. These rows make up what are called platforms, and each platform, like a multi-story building, supports a woodpile. It is not necessary that the stakes need to be arranged crosswise.

For a larger woodpile, it is suitable to use a high pole, which is fixed in the center of the circle; it is even more convenient to control the desired round shape, and this pole also serves as an auxiliary support for the middle part of the structure. The woodpile should reach a height of approximately one meter, after which you can begin to pick up firewood in the center. Expanded clay gravel located under the first layer will serve as good protection against moisture, and laying will ensure air circulation.

Let's move on to the completion stage

After the middle has been filled with logs, the top needs to be supplemented with the flattest of them. They will take on the role of a kind of roof. They are usually covered with tree bark on top, which does not allow water to pass through.

So, to fold a round woodpile, you will need the following tools:

  • polyethylene film;
  • rope and nails;
  • regular roulette.

Logs and logs are the only materials needed.

Firewood is usually stored in sheds or under sheds. But if it is not possible to place firewood in storage, then a good alternative is to build a woodpile, which is often made with your own hands. The woodpile is used for storing and drying firewood. It is recommended to build it near the garden path. If the woodpile is small, it can even be used as the base of a table during a barbecue. The purposes for using the constructed structure can be varied, and the round woodpile also complements the design very well.

To dry firewood for the winter, you need to have a specific place for this in the form of a barn or, in extreme cases, a shed. However, not everyone has the opportunity to arrange such a storage facility on their territory. An alternative solution is to create your own woodpiles.

In addition to its function of drying firewood, it can become a decorative element in the garden: the woodpile needs to be beautifully decorated.

We recommend storing firewood behind the house near the garden path. This will be most convenient when the weather is inclement and you won’t have to walk through the mud across the entire garden. In addition, the woodpile can also serve as a base for a barbecue table.

To arrange the laying of an ordinary woodpile on your own, you need to have the following tools in your arsenal:

  • hammer and screwdriver;
  • carpenter's clamp;
  • circular saw;
  • tape measure and screws for woodworking.

In addition, you will need materials for the frame:

  • 2 boards of 3 meters each, at least 3 cm in thickness and up to 15 cm in width for the base;
  • 4 boards of 1.5 m each for the side parts;
  • 1 m board, 3 cm thick and up to 15 cm wide.

Preparing the site

First, we decide on the location of the woodpile. We recommend placing it on a concrete base or on a brick-lined surface. This way the boards will not rot. After preparing the base, the frame is created.

Folding the frame

A 1 meter board must be cut into 4 elements of 25 cm each. They will be needed for the transverse sides of the frame. When the logs are less than 25 cm in length, the boards will need to be cut to ensure that the material being laid is longer. Next we assemble the frame. You can watch the details of the installation technology in the video tutorial.

After assembling the frame, we begin laying the woodpile.

Photos of woodpiles with your own hands

Laying methods

The strength of the woodpile and its service life depend on the stacking of firewood in the frame.

Recommendation! Stack the firewood tightly so that the longest, straightest logs are at the bottom. The maximum height of the structure should be up to 1 meter 50 cm with a slide. During installation, the stability of the woodpile must be taken into account. To prevent the frame from deforming, it is better to remove excess material.

It is worth noting that due to loose stacking, the woodpile may collapse as the firewood dries out and gaps appear between them.

Simple DIY firewood woodpile, video

However, this design also has some disadvantages: there is no protection from snow and rain. An alternative could be slate sheets that are laid on top of the structure. Place the firewood on a slight slope in advance so that water can flow down the slate. The slate sheet is 113 cm wide; it is either cut in two or the logs are laid in two or three rows.

Setting up a round woodpile

This type of woodpile requires more effort, but the round arrangement looks the most attractive.

How to stack a round woodpile of firewood

To carry out the process yourself, you will need:

  • polyethylene film;
  • rope and tape measure;
  • marker and nail.

Preparing the basis

First you need to clear the surface of the earth from debris and prepare an even layer. Then a polyethylene film is placed on top of the ground to protect the firewood from rotting. To make the woodpile look aesthetically pleasing in the form of a circle, the edges of the film are cut off. This is done using a nail, which must be driven into the center of the film, and a rope. We take the end of the rope with a marker and, pulling it, draw a circle. This gives the base a round shape.

The logs require even laying in the form of a circle so that they do not extend beyond the boundaries of the film. Pay special attention to the first layer, lay it out as carefully as possible. A crooked layer will certainly make itself felt: the structure will turn out unstable and unsightly.

Oval woodpile, video

After laying the bottom layer, we repeat the process up to 50 cm in height of the structure. Now we fill in the gaps so that the logs fit evenly inside. We proceed again to laying the outer rings to the required height of the woodpile (usually 1.5 meters). The end of the installation is the design of the roof. The inner logs should be slightly higher than the outer ones. We lay the planks on top in the form of tiles.

Firewood has been used as a heating material for centuries. After chopping, the firewood must be stacked correctly, this promotes rapid drying and increases the storage time of the natural material. In this matter, it is important to take into account certain rules, and then firewood can be stored for quite a long time. One of them is a round-shaped woodpile or, as it is also called, a stack of woodpiles.

Necessary tool and step-by-step algorithm

The round woodpile is endowed with practicality and visual appeal. In this option, a wide variety of original decorations are possible. To lay a round woodpile, the following tools and materials will be required:

  • polyethylene film;
  • marker;
  • rope;
  • roulette;
  • nail;

The shape of the woodpile in question does not require the use of materials to create a frame. Before you begin, you will need to prepare a place for drying and storing logs. You will need to lay the firewood on the ground, so remove debris and level the surface.

Next, lay the polyethylene on the soil to remove direct contact with the ground. The excess film must be trimmed by driving a nail in the center and securing one end of the rope. Attach a marker to the other end of the rope, then draw the outline of a circle, holding the rope taut.

Let's move on to the installation sequence:

  • lay out the logs in a circle evenly, making sure that the firewood lies on the film and does not touch the open ground;
  • after the first row, it is worth continuing to lay out logs until a height of half a meter is obtained; for greater stability, it is necessary to maintain the slope of the laid out rows in the middle of the woodpile;
  • fill the free space created inside;
  • lay out the outer ring until the desired height of the woodpile is obtained;
  • if the woodpile is high (above 1.5 meters), you will need to alternately lay out the outer and inner rings;
  • The final step is to create a woodpile roof that is laid out predictably from logs. Make the inner ring slightly higher than the outer one, try to lay the roof like a tile.

Important: the first row of logs should be laid out as carefully as possible so that later the structure has a stable position and is aesthetically pleasing.

To illustrate the process, we suggest watching a short video:

The advantages of the chosen form of woodpile are obvious to villagers. This way, the firewood will dry evenly and faster. This makes it an advantageous method for cold regions of the country where summers are short. The design showed itself to be extremely good. Round woodpiles look attractive and allow efficient use of space.

If you have doubts about the stability of the resulting structure, dig wooden posts along the sides. This will give the structure greater stability.

You can decorate the woodpile to your liking, and there are no restrictions in this endeavor!
