Evgeniy Zamyatin we are brief. Evgeniy Zamyatin - we. Main characters of the novel

Year of publication of the book: 1927

Yevgeny Zamyatin’s novel “We” became in many ways defining for the writer. Firstly, this is Zamyatin’s only completed novel, and secondly, it played a decisive role in the writer’s life. Written back in 1920, it was subjected to severe criticism among Soviet functionaries. As a result, the book was published in English, French and some other languages much earlier than in Russian. And the writer himself, unable to endure the persecution, was forced to leave his homeland.

Roman Zamyatin “We” summary

And the next day a decree on the Great Operation was issued. Its goal is the destruction of fantasy. The operated ones come out of the gaping doors like tractors. They surround the crowd, and everyone rushes into scattering. The hero of Yevgeny Zamyatin’s science fiction novel “We” is hiding in the entrance together with his friend O – 90. She wants to save their child. D – 503 gives her a note to I – 303 and promises that she will help.

And finally, the Integral test. Among the staff, members of Mefi and I are 303. She reports that she helped the woman he sent. But then a voice sounds on the radio that the Guardians know everything and that they believe that they will not dare to disrupt it. D – 503 understands that it was the attendant in his house, Yu, who read his diaries and told everything to the Guardians. She probably did this just to protect him. But I – 303 blames him for everything. The main character of Zamyatin's novel “We” gives the command to go down and turn off the engines. And then the Second Builder bursts into the wheelhouse and gives the command upward.

Further in Yevgeny Zamyatin’s novel “We” you can read about how the main character is called by the Benefactor. He is the same person as all the other residents of the city. He convinces D-503 that he was needed only as a builder of Integral. And the next day the Mefis blow up the wall. Birds fly through the streets of the city, and the rebels move west. D – 503 runs to the Guardian Bureau and tells the character of Yevgeny Zamyatin’s novel “We” S – 4711 everything he knows about “Mefi”, but then he realizes that he is one of them. He goes into the restroom and right from there he and his neighbors are taken to the Great Operation.

Now the head of the main character of Zamyatin’s novel “We” is empty. He comes to the Benefactor and tells everything he knows about the rebels. Then he watches with him as they bring in I – 303. She looks at him and is silent. Then she is taken into the Gas Room from which the air is pumped out. She looks at him until her eyes close. They take her out with the help of electrodes, restore consciousness and repeat the procedure again. All this reminds me of something, but what, main character does not remember. Soon other conspirators will be brought here, and then they will find themselves in the Machine. The diary of the main character of Zamyatin's novel “We” ends with the words that reason must win. After all, they have already built a new wall.

Roman Zamyatin “We” on the Top books website

Yevgeny Zamyatin’s novel “We” has become so popular to read thanks to its inclusion in the school curriculum. This factor allowed the work to take a high place among the year. In addition, the novel took a high place among our site. And given the high interest in Zamyatin’s work, he will continue to be represented among.

Genre. Plot. Composition. Conflict. The novel is written in the genre of science fiction - dystopia. Moreover, along with conventionality and fantasy, the novel is also characterized by psychologism, which dramatizes the actual social, ideological issues. One can rather agree with those who recognize the author’s ability not only to demonstrate the meaning of ideas and show their clash, but also the ability to captivate the reader human characters, the psychology of the heroes, that is, with those who regard Zamyatin’s novel not only as a novel of ideas (which, in general, is a property of the genre to which the writer turned), but also a novel of people. Behind the fantastic plot and surroundings, the author sees and shows a person, his breathing, pulse, pulsating thoughts.

The complexity of the novel, its versatility, and the fact that its content is not limited to one dystopian idea are evidenced by the difficulties we experience in determining the genre of this work. L.V. In this regard, Polyakova rightly writes: “According to Zamyatin’s own laws of creativity, the novel “We” was written, or really a “novel” with its desire to depict the volume and versatility of events in the center with a love intrigue, or a story as a narrative, even a chronicle of an era distant from us, or “records”, as D-503 defines them, giving them the title “We”. The author himself most often called the work a novel, “my most comic and most serious thing,” “a fantastic novel,” “a satirical novel,” “satire,” “utopia.” The work clearly does not fit into any known genre canons” 6.

The plot of the novel is fantastic, its action takes place in the distant future in some One State- a utopian city of universal happiness. The state completely took upon itself the care of its residents, or rather, it chained them to happiness: universal, mandatory, equal. In the United State, with the invention of oil food, the long-time enemy of humanity was defeated - hunger, dependence on nature is eliminated and there is no need to think about tomorrow.

Residents of the United State are not familiar with another source of suffering and experiences of humanity - Love, and with it jealousy, an irrational waste of physical and emotional strength, nothing prevents them from “functioning normally.” Love is reduced to random, medically useful procedures on applications - pink coupons. Moreover, inequality and injustice have also been eliminated in this area - in gender relations: each number has the right to the number of the other sex as a sexual product. A new practical science has been created - “child breeding”, and this area is also completely under the jurisdiction of the Unified State. Children are raised at the Children's Educational Plant, where school subjects are taught by robots.

Art is replaced by the Music Factory, whose marches give the numbers vigor and unite them into a single happy monolithic “We”. Aesthetic ecstasy among the inhabitants of the United State is caused only by such works as the creepy, red “Flowers of Judgment Sentences”, the immortal tragedy “Late for Work” and the reference book “Stances on Sexual Hygiene”. Monolithically united rows of four “numbers” march to lectures, to work, to classrooms, and for walks:

The avenue is full: in this weather, we usually spend our afternoon private hour on an extra walk. As always, the music factory sang the March of the United State with all its pipes. In measured rows, four at a time, enthusiastically beating time, there were numbers - hundreds, thousands of numbers, in bluish unifs, with gold plaques on the chest - the state number of each and every one. And I - we four - are one of the countless waves in this mighty stream.

The action of utopias known in world literature takes place, as a rule, on an island or in an ideal city. Zamyatin chooses a city, which is symbolic in the context of the technical civilization of the twentieth century, when the city-village antinomy arose. In ancient times, the city was not yet opposed to the village, but in modern times the city means separation from nature, the earth, separation from human essence. In his lecture “Modern Russian Literature,” E. Zamyatin called anti-urbanism, an orientation “to the wilderness, to the province, to the countryside, to the outskirts,” one of the features of neorealism, because “the life of big cities is similar to the life of factories: it depersonalizes, makes people what then the same, machine-made.”

The poetics of the novel, including the features of psychologism, are determined by its genre specificity. Often a novel seems “heavy”, so A.K. Voronsky wrote about “We”: “the novel is very drawn out and difficult to read.” A.I. Solzhenitsyn evaluates the novel as “a brilliant thing, sparkling with talent; It is rare among fantastic literature in that people are alive and their fate worries them very much.”

The actions of the heroes in this novel are strictly regulated and calculated. However, the form and structure of the novel is deeply organic to the author’s intention, to the mechanistic, robotic world of the novel. Let's not forget that the main character of the novel is a mathematician, the builder of Integral. He was accustomed to the language of formulas and precise concepts. For example, about his friend O-90, about her sweet chatter, he writes:

In general, this sweet O... how should I say... her tongue speed is incorrectly calculated, the second speed of the tongue should always be a little less than the second speed of thought, and certainly not vice versa.

The novel is written in the form of diary notes (there are 40 of them). D-503 is driven by the goal of glorifying the achievements of an ideal society. The novel is written in the first person singular - “I” D-503, but his “I” is completely dissolved in the general “We”, and at first the “mental” world of the novel’s protagonist is the “typical” world of a resident of Yerevan. Narration in the first person singular (which is characterized by reflection, introspection, and analysis of one’s own experiences), in principle, intimates the narrative and allows one to more fully reveal the image from the inside. But this nature of the narrative impoverishes other images that exist only in perception, in the narrator’s assessments, and no other point of view is provided. The world of the United State is shown from the inside - in the perception of the hero, there is no authorial voice in the text, and this is very important and justified: “the author of a dystopia (and a novel of a non-classical type, the creator of which Zamyatin thought of himself) cannot become like the creator of the utopian genre ridiculed by him, Zamyatin , whose word is the bearer of the final truth, complete, final knowledge” 8. The depiction of a utopian world in world literature was not new, but a look at a utopian society from the inside, from the point of view of one of its inhabitants, is one of E. Zamyatin’s innovative techniques.

  • 1.4. Genre and plot of the novel "We"

Summary We

The novel takes place in the distant future. The main character is a talented engineer and mathematician D-503. He is the builder of the Integral spacecraft, designed to explore other planets. D-503 lives in the United State of the Future, headed by the Benefactor. Over the course of the novel, he writes notes for possible descendants, telling them about “the highest peaks in human history.” The manuscript is called “We” and consists of 40 notes.

All citizens of the United State, like D-503, do not have names, but only numbers calculated according to the Taylor system and regulated by the Hourly Tablet of Life. They do everything at the same time: they get up together, go to work together, eat together, walk together, go to the classroom together, go to bed together. They even have a specific timetable for romantic meetings using pink coupons. All residents of the United State wear the same uniform. If someone breaks the laws, they are executed by the Benefactor himself using a special Machine.

One day in the spring, when D-503 was walking with his betrothed named O-90 to the march of the Music Factory trumpets, some stranger approached him. She was stubbornly flexible, thin as a whip and with sharp, very white teeth. Her name was I-330, and she seemed to read D-503's thoughts. He was a little embarrassed. There was a short conversation between them, during which I-330 managed to invite him to her place the day after tomorrow. She left with some S-shaped man.

On the appointed day, he appeared in the Ancient House, where everything reminded him of the past: a piano, a statue of Pushkin. I-330 invited him to break the usual schedule of meetings and stay with her, but he refused. In addition, he had to report her to the Guardian Bureau as a lawbreaker. However, instead, the next day, he went to the Medical Bureau to take a sick leave from work.

In addition to D-503, the poet R-13 was also assigned to O-90, although everyone knew that “out of love” she only visited D-503. For various reasons, the denunciation does not work out and 48 hours pass, which means now he himself is a criminal before the State. Together with other numbers on a solemn day, he goes to Cuba Square to attend the execution of a poet who wrote nasty things about the Benefactor. The verdict was read with trembling lips by his friend, the poet R-13. He doesn’t want to discuss his performance later and asks not to remind him about it. The criminal was executed by the Benefactor himself. His body disappeared into thin air as the crowd cheered.

Soon D-503 learns that I-330 has signed up for him. Arriving at her at the appointed hour, he discovers that she does not lead a decent lifestyle. She smokes, drinks liquor and even forces him to take a sip through a kiss, and this is all contrary to the laws of their State. In theory, he should report her, but he can’t. He's something different now. As he himself wrote in his manuscript, he is terminally ill, that is, he has a soul.

In search of meetings with I-330, he one day came to the Ancient House. There he fell into a dungeon, where he found himself in a completely new, irrational world. There he found her. O-90, realizing that the Integral builder fell in love with someone else, removed her record from him. The only thing she asked for goodbye was a child. D-503 reminded her that she had not reached the Maternal Norm and for such a violation could fall under the Benefactor's Machine, but she insisted, and he could not refuse her. Fulfilling O-90’s request, he seemed to throw himself down from the battery tower.

I-330 did not appear for a long time. When asked why she was torturing him so much, she replied that she wanted to test him. Sitting in the cup of the chair and smiling with her white, sharp-toothed smile, she resembled a bee. It contains both sting and honey. He felt that she was not telling her something. She said that after Unanimity Day he would understand everything.

This great day has come - the annual election of the Benefactor and the triumph of the united “We”. Millions of hands rose for the former Benefactor and thousands - against. Among these thousand there was her – his beloved I-330. And then the massacre began: a whirlwind of fluttering robes, the confused figures of the Guardians. D-503 barely managed to save I-330 from the angry crowd. The next day the newspapers wrote that the same candidate for Benefactor had been winning for 48 years in a row.

Leaflets with the words “Mefi” began to appear on the streets. From I-330 he learned that it was an organization opposed to the current State. She herself also entered into it and invited D-503 to join them. The Mefi members plan to capture the Integral during the tests in order to deal a serious blow to the United State. The D-503 faces a real dilemma. On the one hand, he wants to go and hand over their conspiracy to the Guardian Bureau, but he cannot, since his beloved is part of this conspiracy. On the other hand, he cannot join them, because he is afraid that she is with him only because he is the Integral tester.

The next morning, news appeared in the newspaper that all residents of the State would be subjected to the Great Operation to rid themselves of fantasies and souls. After this operation they should become equal and perfect. D-503 manages to escape from the auditorium where everyone was gathered for this operation. Along the way, he accidentally encounters O-90, who asks him to save her and the child. Then he writes a note and sends it beyond the walls of the State to I-330. When the Integral tests begin, the conspirators' plan is made public.

I-330 thinks that D-503 turned them in, but in fact it was duty officer Yu who read his notes. The benefactor calls D-503 and says that the conspirators only needed him as a tester of the Integral. The next morning the city was filled with distraught residents. No one followed the rules and laws of the State, which is why chaos reigned everywhere. Then everyone was caught, including D-503, and brought to auditorium 112 for the Great Operation.

After the operation, he felt light and well, his head was empty. The next day he came to the Benefactor and told everything he knew about the “enemies of happiness,” that is, the conspirators. They brought some woman into the Gas Room, from whom they tried to extract testimony. D-503 watched this together with the Benefactor. She vaguely reminded him of something, but he didn’t understand what exactly. She just smiled and silently looked at D-503. She was tortured in front of his eyes, but he no longer felt anything. She could have given away many people, but she didn’t. The next day, she is to be executed by the Benefactor Machine, as are some of the other conspirators. A temporary wall of high-voltage walls appeared in the city. D-503’s notes end with the words: “I’m sure we will win. Because reason must win."

Distant future. D-503, a talented engineer, builder of the Integral spacecraft, keeps notes for posterity, tells them about “the highest peaks in human history” - the life of the United State and its head, the Benefactor. The title of the manuscript is “We”. D-503 admires the fact that the citizens of the United State, numbers, lead a life calculated according to the Taylor system, strictly regulated by the Table of Hours: at the same time they get up, start and finish work, go for a walk, go to the auditorium, and go to bed. For the numbers, a suitable report card of sexual days is determined and a pink card book is issued. D-503 is sure: “We” are from God, and “I” are from the devil.”

One spring day, with his cute, rounded girlfriend, registered 0-90 on him, D-503, along with other identically dressed numbers, walks to the march of the Music Factory trumpets. A stranger with very white and sharp teeth, with some kind of annoying X in her eyes or eyebrows, speaks to him. I-330, thin, sharp, stubbornly flexible, like a whip, reads the thoughts of D-503.

A few days later, I-330 invites D-503 to the Ancient House (they fly there by air). In the apartment-museum there is a piano, a chaos of colors and shapes, a statue of Pushkin. D-503 is caught in a wild whirlwind of ancient life. But when I-330 asks him to break his routine and stay with her, D-503 intends to go to the Guardian Bureau and report her. However, the next day he goes to the Medical Bureau: it seems to him that the irrational No. 1 has grown into him and that he is clearly ill. He is released from work.

D-503, along with other numbers, is present in Cuba Square during the execution of a poet who wrote blasphemous poems about the Benefactor. The poetic sentence is read by friend D-503 with trembling gray lips, State Poet R-13. The criminal is executed by the Benefactor himself, heavy, stony, like fate. The sharp blade of the beam of his Machine sparkles, and instead of a number there is a puddle of chemically pure water.

Soon the Integral builder receives a notification that I-330 has signed up for him. D-503 appears to her at the appointed hour. I-330 teases him: smokes ancient “cigarettes”, drinks liquor, makes D-503 take a sip while kissing. The use of these poisons is prohibited in the United State, and D-503 should report this, but cannot. Now he is different. In the tenth entry, he admits that he is perishing and can no longer fulfill his duties to the United State, and in the eleventh - that there are now two “I” in him - he is the old one, innocent, like Adam, and the new one - wild, loving and jealous, just like in the idiotic ancient books. If only I knew which of these “I”s is real!

D-503 cannot live without I-330, but she is nowhere to be found. In the Medical Bureau, where the double-curved Guardian S-4711, friend I, helps him get there, it turns out that the builder of “Integral” is terminally ill: he, like some other numbers, has developed a soul.

D-503 comes to the Ancient House, to “their” apartment, opens the closet door, and suddenly... the floor disappears from under his feet, he descends into some kind of dungeon, reaches the door, behind which there is a rumble. His friend, the doctor, appears from there. “I thought she, I-330...” - “Stay right there!” – the doctor disappears. Finally! Finally she's there. D and I leave - two or one... She walks, like him, with her eyes closed, her head thrown up, her lips bitten... The builder of “Integral” is now in a new world: there is something clumsy, shaggy, irrational all around.

0-90 understands: D-503 loves another, so she removes her record on him. Coming to say goodbye to him, she asks: “I want - I owe you a child - and I will leave, I will leave!” - "What? Do you want a Benefactor's Car? You are ten centimeters below the Mother’s Norm!” - "Let be! But I will feel it within myself. And even for a few days...” How to refuse her?.. And D-503 fulfills her request - as if throwing himself down from a battery tower.

I-330 finally appears at its beloved. “Why did you torment me, why didn’t you come?” - “Or maybe I needed to test you, I needed to know that you would do everything I want, that you are already completely mine?” - “Yes, absolutely!” Sweet, sharp teeth; a smile, it is in the cup of the chair - like a bee: it has a sting and honey. And then - bees - lips, the sweet pain of flowering, the pain of love... “I can’t do this, I. You always leave something unsaid,” - “Aren’t you afraid to follow me everywhere?” - “No, I’m not afraid!” - “Then after the Day of Unanimity you will know everything, unless...”

The great Day of Unanimity is coming, something like ancient Easter, as D-503 writes; annual election of the Benefactor, the triumph of the will of the united “We”. A cast-iron, slow voice: “Whoever is in favor, please raise your hands.” The rustle of millions of hands, with effort he raises his and D-503. “Who is “against”?” Thousands of hands shot up, and among them was the hand of I-330. And then - a whirlwind of clothes fluttered by the run, confused figures of the Guardians, R-13, carrying away I-330 in its arms. Like a battering ram, D-503 steams through the crowd, snatches I, covered in blood, from R-13, hugs him tightly and carries him away. If only I could carry her like this, carry her, carry her...

And the next day in the United State Newspaper: “For the 48th time, the same Benefactor was unanimously elected.” And in the city there are leaflets posted everywhere with the inscription “Mefi”.

D-503 from I-330 along the corridors under the Ancient House exit the city beyond the Green Wall, into the lower world. The unbearably colorful noise, whistle, light. D-503 is dizzy. D-503 sees wild people, overgrown with fur, cheerful, cheerful. I-330 introduces them to the builder of the Integral and says that he will help capture the ship, and then they will be able to destroy the Wall between the city and the wild world. And on the stone there are huge letters “Mephi”. D-503 is clear: wild people are the half that the townspeople lost, some are H2, others are O, and to make H2O, the halves need to unite.

I makes an appointment with D in the Ancient House and reveals to him the “Mephi” plan: to capture the “Integral” during a test flight and, having made it a weapon against the United State, end everything at once, quickly, without pain. “What an absurdity, I! After all, our revolution was the last!” – “There is no last one, revolutions are endless, otherwise there will be entropy, blissful peace, balance. But it is necessary to break it for the sake of endless movement.” D-503 cannot give up the conspirators, because among them... But suddenly he thinks: what if she is with him only because...

The next morning, a decree on the Great Operation appears in the State Gazette. The goal is to destroy fantasy. All numbers must undergo operations in order to become perfect, machine-equal. Maybe do surgery D and be cured from the soul, from I? But he can't live without her. Doesn't want to be saved...

On the corner, in the auditorium, the door is wide open, and from there comes a slow column of operated patients. Now these are not people, but some kind of humanoid tractors. They plow uncontrollably through the crowd and suddenly envelop it in a ring. Someone's piercing cry:

“They are driving, run!” And everyone runs away. D-503 runs into some entrance to rest, and immediately 0-90 is there too. She also does not want the operation and asks to save her and their unborn child. D-503 gives her a note to I-330: she will help.

And now the long-awaited flight of “Integral”. Among the numbers on the ship are members of Mefi. “Up – 45!” - commanded by D-503. A dull explosion - a push, then an instant curtain of clouds - a ship through it. And the sun, the blue sky. In the radiotelephone room, D-503 finds I-330 - in an auditory winged helmet, sparkling, flying, like the ancient Valkyries. “Yesterday evening she came to me with your note,” she says to D. “And I sent it - it’s already there, behind the Wall. She will live...” Lunch hour. Everything is in the dining room. And suddenly someone declares: “On behalf of the Guardians... We know everything. To you, to whom I speak, they hear... The test will be completed, you will not dare to disrupt it. And then...” I has wild, blue sparks. In D's ear: “Ah, so it's you? Have you “fulfilled your duty”?” And he suddenly realizes with horror: this is the duty officer, Yu, who has been in his room more than once, and she has read his notes. The builder of the “Integral” is in the command room. He firmly orders: “Down! Stop engines. The end of everything." Clouds - and then a distant green spot rushes like a whirlwind towards the ship. The distorted face of the Second Builder. He pushes the D-503 as hard as he can, and it, already falling, vaguely hears: “Aft - full speed!” A sharp jump up.

D-503 is summoned by the Benefactor and tells him that the ancient dream of paradise is now coming true - a place where the blessed have an operated fantasy, and that D-503 was needed by the conspirators only as the builder of “Integral”. “We don’t know their names yet, but I’m sure we’ll find out from you.”

The next day it turns out that the Wall has been blown up and flocks of birds are flying in the city. There are rebels on the streets. Swallowing the storm with their open mouths, they move west. Through the glass of the walls you can see: female and male numbers are copulating, without even lowering the curtains, without any coupons...

D-503 runs to the Guardian Bureau and tells S-4711 everything he knows about “Mephi”. He, like ancient Abraham, sacrifices Isaac - himself. And suddenly it becomes clear to the builder of “Integral”: S is one of those...

Headlong D-503 - from the Guardian Bureau and - into one of the public restrooms. There, his neighbor, occupying the seat on the left, shares with him his discovery: “There is no infinity! Everything is finite, everything is simple, everything is computable; and then we will win philosophically...” - “And where does your finite universe end? What's next? The neighbor does not have time to answer. D-503 and everyone who was there are captured and subjected to the Great Operation in Auditorium 112. D-503’s head is now empty, easy...

The next day he appears to the Benefactor and tells everything he knows about the enemies of happiness. And here he is at the same table with the Benefactor in the famous Gas Room. They bring that woman. She must give her testimony, but she just remains silent and smiles. Then she is introduced under the bell. When the air is pumped out from under the bell, she throws her head back, her eyes are half-closed, her lips are clenched - this reminds D-503 of something. She looks at him, tightly gripping the arms of the chair, staring until her eyes close completely. Then they pull her out, quickly revive her with the help of electrodes, and put her under the bell again. This is repeated three times - and still she does not say a word. Tomorrow she and the others brought with her will ascend the steps of the Benefactor's Machine.

D-503 ends his notes this way: “A temporary wall of high-voltage waves has been constructed in the city. I'm sure we will win. Because reason must win.”

Option 2

The construction engineer of the Integral, a spaceship named D-503, writes notes about the achievements of the United State under the permanent leadership and control of the Benefactor. Citizens are called numbers, their lives are measured by the Table of Hours and calculated according to the Taylor system. For each, the time of the beginning and end of the working day, going to bed, waking up, days for sex on coupons are determined. The leading principle of society: “We are from God, I am from the devil.”

During a walk with his girlfriend O-90 who signed up for him, D-503 meets an unusual girl I-330. Sharp, flexible, thin and stubborn with sharp teeth that irritate the eye, eyebrows and eyes.

I-330 invited D-503 to an apartment-museum with a piano and a statue of Pushkin. The Ancient House shocked the engineer with its riot of shapes and colors. He understands that he is violating the established Law, that he must inform his new acquaintance that he is sick with the irrational No. 1 that has grown into him. An engineer is given time off work due to illness.

I-330 continues to test the engineer. On a date, she lights ancient cigarettes, drinks forbidden liquor, and persuades D-503 to join the fun. The builder of “Integral” begins to feel an internal split, trying to determine which of his “I” is real: the old and innocent or the loving and wild. In the United State, the formation of the soul of a number is considered a terrible disease.

The holiday of the triumph of the will of the united “We” has arrived - the election of the Benefactor, the Day of Unanimity. The silent show of hands in favor was broken by the dissenters, who were ordered to be immediately seized. D-503 saves his I-330 from the hands of the Guardians, takes it beyond the Green Wall and out of the city. The engineer is introduced to Mephi's plan to hijack his ship during a test flight in order to destroy the Wall. D-503 agrees to help.

The benefactor passes a decree on the destruction of the fantasy called the Great Operation, mandatory for all numbers. Those who have been operated on regain peace and are healed from the soul. Many manage to hide from the Guardians, among them D-503 and O-90.

The day of testing the spacecraft has arrived. During the flight, it turns out that the plans of the organizers of “Mefi” have been revealed. The engineer realizes that duty officer Yu read his notes and reported to the Guardians, and his beloved I-330 accuses him of betraying him.

The Green Wall has been blown up, there is chaos and a storm in the city. The operated D-503 indignantly tells the Guardian about “Mefi”. Before his eyes, in the presence of the Benefactor, a girl with sharp teeth, who vaguely reminds the engineer of someone, is being tortured under a bell. “Reason must win,” writes D-503 in his notes. A wall of high-voltage waves was erected around the city.

  • Zamyatin We Summary

Summary We are Zamyatin

The action of the work takes place in the distant future, where human names are replaced by serial numbers. The hero under the name D-503 builds an amazing spacecraft "Integral", and in free time writes history for posterity, telling about the great achievements of the United State headed by the Benefactor. The engineer names his work simply - "We". During his story, D-503 is proud and admires the strict orderliness of life in his country. He likes the fact that citizen-numbers live days predetermined by the Taylor system, regulated by the Tablet of Hours. Everything goes exactly according to schedule: people wake up, work, walk, and go to bed only at a certain time. Even sexual life is clearly consistent with the established schedule, making notes about which is customary in the pink coupon book.

The hero firmly believes that collective existence leads to success, and individualism is doomed to failure.

One day, D-503 goes for a walk with his girlfriend 0-90. They walk peacefully to the march of the Music Factory in a crowd of other identical numbers, when a strange, unfamiliar woman with the name I-330 approaches D-503. She is stubborn, harsh, slightly annoying, as if looking into the hero’s thoughts. After a while, she and D-503 fly by air to the Ancient House. This is an unusual house-museum, in which chaos of colors and shapes reigns, where there are such things as a piano and a bust of Pushkin. The hero is inspired, but when I-330 asks him, contrary to the rules, to stay with her, D-503 decides to write a denunciation against the woman.

But plans soon change, as the young man discovers that he has fallen ill with some irrational infection. The Medical Bureau releases him from work.

In the United State, it is customary to take the lives of those who do not conform to the system, and now they are executing one poet who dared to speak blasphemously about the Benefactor. D-503 is also present at this execution. He sees how the State Poet R-13, familiar to him, timidly reads out the verdict in verse, and how the Benefactor himself decides fate with the help of the beam of his Machine. One movement - and all that remains from the number is chemically pure water.

One day the engineer finds out that he has appeared on the list of that very stranger I-330. At a certain time, the hero comes to her. I-330 is having fun: smoking cigarettes and drinking liquor. Such poisons are strictly prohibited in the One State, but I-330 still convinces D-503 to take a sip. According to the rules, he must report immediately, but something is changing in D-503, and he can no longer be the same. A new person awakens in him, alive and feeling. How can you figure out which “I” is true?

One of the prophetic books of the twentieth century was written by the Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin. "We". The summary of the plot cannot convey the full depth and facets of this work, written at the beginning of the twentieth century. Perhaps the author himself did not anticipate the prophetic significance of his book.

Evgeny Zamyatin, "We". Summary

The action takes place in the distant future. The story is told from the perspective of an engineer designing the Integral intergalactic spacecraft. The structure of society and the state is schematically outlined, in which a person has completely lost any meaning and is obliged to forget about his human "I". Everything around is completely subordinated to some mystical will of the One State. All existence is extremely regulated, people have numbers instead of names, instead of fate they have functional duties.

People march in formation to work and to play. Even sexual relations are regulated by the Single State, pink coupons are issued for them on the corresponding days of the week. No one asks the consent of the partner, but it is allowed to draw a curtain on this occasion on a transparent wall in residential complex. For all the caricature of the depicted world, throughout the twentieth century, one could often observe something similar to it. Many people later remembered this masterpiece more than once - Evgeny Zamyatin, “We”. The summary and scheme of the realities depicted in the book found an intersection with what was happening in many totalitarian countries. Any attempt not only to escape from this whole "beautiful" world, but even to think about it, was criminal and severely punished. But the main character fell into the ranks of the conspirators who set out to destroy the Universal Happiness reigning around. For their own purposes, they decided to use the spaceship being built under his leadership. Plans to overthrow the United State fail, the conspirators are suppressed, but the main character did not understand anything about what was happening. He came personally to the Supreme Benefactor and surrendered all his associates who had drawn him into the conspiracy. " Common sense"won an inevitable victory, and everyone who decided to encroach on him was destroyed. It will continue to be so. This is the whole plot of the famous book that Zamyatin wrote, “We.” The summary of this note does not allow us to dwell on small details. Great books should be read, it's not a TV show.

But there is a reason to look around...

Is it really such nonsense that the Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin portrayed? Don't we notice anything similar in real life? The gaze involuntarily stops at North Korea and the plump hamster that rules it, Kim Jong-un. Yes, this whole country is one big United State, where a person does not mean anything. Everything that happens here evokes a feeling of heavy bewilderment. A haunting question arises: “Is this already a complete apocalypse?” Or just him summary? “We”, Zamyatin, dystopia... Was everything predetermined? Such an associative series is built in the mind when getting acquainted with news from this country. Yes, perhaps, even Zamyatin, with all his imagination, would not have thought of such a thing as shooting from a mortar a general decorated with orders, who was guilty of allegedly being drunk and not crying sincerely enough at the funeral of the previous Supreme Ruler of the United State.

The novel takes place in the distant future. The main character is D-503, an engineer who built the Integral spacecraft. He writes a manuscript, which is a kind of message to his descendants. The manuscript tells how happily the citizens of the Great State, headed by the Benefactor, live. The manuscript is called “We”, and this name is not at all accidental - in the State there is no concept of “I”, and the citizens of the State lead a life calculated according to Taylor’s special system, doing everything at the same time. They come to work together and leave it together, eat together and walk together. The citizens of the State do not have names in the sense that they did in the past - they are all assigned numbers. And in order to meet with a number of the opposite sex, you need to sign up for him and receive a special coupon book with a schedule of sexual meetings. Violators of state laws are executed by the Benefactor himself using a special Machine.

One day, while walking with O-90, who signed up for him, D-503 meets a stranger, I-330, who speaks to him, and a few days later invites him to the Ancient House. This is an apartment-museum, in which there are things from ancient times - a piano, a statue of Pushkin and much more that you will not see in their world for a long time. I-330 approaches the engineer with a proposal to break the daily routine and stay with her. He is horrified, realizing that now he must go to the Guardian Bureau and report there about a woman who is violating the rules adopted in the State. Instead, he goes to the Medical Bureau, where he is released from work.

A short time later he is informed that I-330 has signed up for him. They meet and I behaves not at all as is customary in the State - she smokes cigarettes, drinks liquor, making D-503 drink a sip of liquor. Both are considered prohibited poisons in the State, and D-503 simply must report the violation to the Guardian Bureau. But he can't do it. Moreover, he suddenly realizes that he is becoming completely different and can no longer fulfill his duties to the State, which he writes about in his manuscript. Arriving at the Medical Bureau, he learns that he is terminally ill - he has a soul.

He is looking for a meeting with I-330, comes to the Ancient House and, looking into the closet, falls into the dungeon, ending up in a new, completely irrational world for him, where he meets I.

His ex-girlfriend O-90, realizing that he can no longer meet with her, comes to him with the words that she wants a child from him. He is horrified - she has not yet reached the Maternal Norm, and for violating it, the Benefactor Machine awaits her. But she is persistent, and D fulfills her request.

The main holiday of the United State is coming - the Day of Unanimity, during which the election of the Benefactor is made. D-503, along with millions of citizens, votes for the former Benefactor. Thousands of citizens of the State are voting against it, and I-330 is among them. D-503 saves her from reprisals, taking her away from the crowd. The next day, the State Newspaper reports that the same person was unanimously elected Benefactor for the 48th time, and leaflets signed “Mefi” appear on the streets. During the next meeting, I-330 reveals to the engineer that Mefi is an organization that opposes the laws of the United State, and she herself is a member of this organization. She invites D-503 to join them and reveals a plan - they want to capture the Integral during tests and deliver a blow to the State that will decide everything. D cannot go to the Guardian Bureau and reveal the conspiracy, since I am among the conspirators, but he cannot and decides to support them, fearing that she is meeting with him only because it is he, as the creator, who will conduct the test flight "Integral".

The next day, the Decree on the Great Operation was published in the Newspaper. All numbers of the state should undergo this operation, and it will help them get rid of fantasies, from the soul, and become perfect and completely equal. Escaping from the auditorium, where all citizens were gathered for the Operation, D-503 meets O-90, who asks to save her and the child. He writes a note, sending it to I-330. I helps O-90 get over the wall surrounding the State.

Testing of the Integral has begun. But during the tests, the conspirators learn that their plan has been exposed. I thinks that it was D who gave them away, and he understands that his notes, in which he outlined everything that worried him, were read by the duty officer Yu - she was the one who reported on everyone.

D-503 is summoned by the Benefactor and tells him that the conspirators needed him only as the creator of Integral. The next day, the streets of the city are filled with rebels. Citizens of the state forget about all the rules, chaos and disorder reign in the city. But the State is not asleep - everyone, including D-503, is grabbed on the streets, brought to the auditorium and subjected to the Great Operation. After the operation, D feels how easy it has become for him.

He comes to the Benefactor and tells him everything he knows about the conspirators. Together with the Benefactor, he watches as they try to extract testimony from some woman in the Gas Chamber. She just smiles, looks at D and is silent. It reminds him of something, but he can't figure out what it is. The next day, she must go with the other conspirators to the Benefactor's Machine. The novel ends with the entry of D-503: “I am sure we will win. Because reason must win."

The main events from the dystopia “We” take place in the distant future, when society has changed greatly and acquired a completely different look, completely unusual for us. But the plot tells about current events - rebellion against the system, the desire to find individuality in a world of copies, love in spite of everything. Therefore, this book is in demand today, and the Literaguru team prepared it brief retelling And.

(572 words) The novel takes place in the distant future, more precisely in the 32nd century. Society here has changed radically. There are no more names, now each citizen is assigned an individual number. Feelings and emotions no longer exist; they have been eradicated as unnecessary. All citizens live according to a single schedule: they go to bed and wake up at the same time, go to work and finish their work shifts. Violation of the schedule will result in immediate punishment.

This is where the hero of the novel lives - engineer D-503, who keeps diary entries every day. He admires his state and is devoted to it. He is working on the construction of the Integral - a spaceship, a strategically important facility of the State.

One day, while walking with his girlfriend 0-90, he meets a strange woman. With her conversations, and her appearance in general, she brings chaos into his thoughts. The stranger wears the number I-330.

A few days later, I-330 invites D-503 to the Ancient House - Museum. This place houses things from the old days, such as a bust of Pushkin and a piano. All this impresses the hero and his girlfriend. I-330 asks D-503 to stay in the house with her and break the established routine. The hero is frightened by such a proposal and leaves home with the intention of reporting the girl to the Guardian Bureau. But he already feels irreversible changes in himself and instead goes to the Medical Bureau, where he is given sick leave.

After some time, D-503 again receives a notification that I-330 wants to meet with him. The hero, without thinking twice, goes to meet her, because she has already become indifferent to him. He can no longer help but think about her. When they meet, I-330 smokes, drinks, and teases him. This is prohibited in the United State, but D-503 does not report her because of the feelings that arose in his soul.

After this meeting, D-503 searches everywhere for his beloved. Out of despair, he goes to the house-museum where their first meeting took place. There he meets his doctor friend number R-013. He shows him a secret door in the closet, through which they find themselves in a completely different world. There are no usual strict rules here, people experience emotions and know what emotions are. They are sad, they are happy, they are afraid, they love. Here, in this world, he meets I-330.

The old girlfriend of the hero 0-90 understands that he has fallen in love with another woman and comes to him to say goodbye. As a farewell, she asks to make her a child. If the State learns of such a violation, both will face severe punishment in the form of execution, but D-503 agrees to her request, after which he takes her to that very world behind the door in the house-museum.

At this time, the Day of Unanimity begins in the United State. On this day, all the residents gather in the central square, a metallic voice slowly says: “Who is for? ", and all citizens must raise their hands. But this time everything is going differently, and among the many hands “for”, hands “against” are raised. D-503 and I-330 find themselves on different sides. At this time, a tornado hits the square, punishing all the protesters. And D-503, risking his own life, carries out the bloody I-330, thereby saving her life.

I-330 introduces D-503 to his comrades' plan. They want to take over Integral, overthrow the government and change their world. D-503 resists such an idea for a long time, but eventually agrees. And the next morning a message appears in the newspapers that everyone is obliged to undergo the Great Operation, which will destroy the imagination of citizens and thereby restore order in the State.

On the day of the test flight of Integral, the conspirators' plan is revealed. I-330 is sure that D-503 betrayed them, but it’s not him. The denunciation was made by the caretaker of the house; she read all the hero’s diary entries.

D-503, like many others, is forcibly subjected to an operation to remove the fantasy. After this, he feels great relief, all dangerous feelings and thoughts disappear. He informs the Benefactor of everything he knows about the conspirators. They are all sentenced to death.

Interesting? Save it on your wall!

Entry 1

Abstract:
ANNOUNCEMENT. THE WISE OF THE LINES. POEM.

I am simply copying - word for word - what was published today in the State Newspaper: “In 120 days, the construction of INTEGRAL will be completed. The great, historical hour is near, when the first INTEGRAL will soar into world space. A thousand years ago, your heroic ancestors conquered the entire globe to the power of the One State. You have an even more glorious feat ahead of you: with a glass, electric, fire-breathing INTEGRAL, integrate the infinite equation of the universe. You will have to subjugate, under the beneficent yoke of reason, unknown creatures living on other planets - perhaps still in a wild state of freedom. If they do not understand that we bring them mathematically infallible happiness, it is our duty to make them be happy. But before weapons, we test the word. On behalf of the Benefactor it is announced to all numbers of the United State: Anyone who feels able is obliged to compose treatises, poems, manifestos, odes or other writings about the beauty and greatness of the United State. This will be the first load that INTEGRAL will carry. Long live the United State, long live the numbers, long live the Benefactor!” I write this and feel my cheeks burning. Yes: integrate the grand universal equation. Yes: bend the wild curve, straighten it along a tangent - an asymptote - in a straight line. Because the line of the United State is a straight line. Great, divine, precise, wise straight line - the wisest of lines... I, D-503, the builder of INTEGRAL, am only one of the mathematicians of the United State. My pen, accustomed to numbers, is unable to create music of assonance and rhyme. I will just try to write down what I see, what I think - more precisely, what we think (that’s right: we, and let this “WE” be the title of my notes). But this will be a derivative of our life, from the mathematically perfect life of the One State, and if so, then won’t it be in itself, against my will, a poem? It will happen - I believe and know. I write this and feel my cheeks burning. This is probably similar to what a woman experiences when she first hears the pulse of a new - still tiny, blind person - within herself. This is me and at the same time not me. And for many months it will be necessary to feed it with your juice, your blood, and then, with pain, tear it away from yourself and lay it at the feet of the United State. But I'm ready, just like everyone - or almost every one of us. I'm ready.

This was Zamyatin’s writing credo. We" is a dystopian novel by Yevgeny Zamyatin with elements of satire (1920). Source: All masterpieces of world literature in brief. At the end of the 20s, Zamyatin was hit by a campaign of harassment from the literary authorities.

The test will be completed, you will not dare to disrupt it. The novel takes place in the distant future. The citizens of the State do not have names in the sense that they did in the past - they are all assigned numbers.

The use of these poisons is prohibited in the United State, and D-503 should report this, but cannot. Now he is different. And here he is at the same table with the Benefactor in the famous Gas Room. Then they pull her out, quickly revive her with the help of electrodes, and put her under the bell again.

D-503 is summoned by the Benefactor and tells him that the conspirators needed him only as the creator of Integral. The novel ends with the entry of D-503: “I am sure we will win. Real literature can only exist where it is made not by executive and complacent officials, but by madmen, hermits, heretics, dreamers, rebels, skeptics” (article “I’m Afraid”).

In addition, the novel contained allusions to some events civil war(“war of the city against the countryside”). The novel is structured as a diary of one of the key figures in a hypothetical future society. However, then everyone who was nearby is driven into the nearest auditorium with the painfully familiar number 112 (his first “forbidden date” took place there).

The ideological meaning of Zamyatin’s novel “We”

A stranger with very white and sharp teeth, with some kind of annoying X in her eyes or eyebrows, speaks to him. D-503 comes to the Ancient House, to “their” apartment, opens the closet door, and suddenly… The builder of the “Integral” is now in a new world: something clumsy, shaggy, irrational is all around.

And the next day in the United State Newspaper: "For the 48th time, the same Benefactor was unanimously elected." And in the city there are leaflets with the inscription “Mefi” posted everywhere. D-503 cannot betray the conspirators, because among them... But suddenly he thinks: what if she is with him only because of... At the corner, in the auditorium, the door is wide open, and from there - a slow column of the operated ones. Now these are not people, but some kind of humanoid tractors.

D-503 runs into some entrance to take a break, and immediately 0-90 is there too. She also does not want the operation and asks to save her and their unborn child. And then…” I have wild, blue sparks. In D’s ear: “Oh, so it’s you? Have you “fulfilled your duty”? And he suddenly realizes with horror: this is the duty officer, Yu, who has been in his room more than once, and she has read his notes.

The next day it turns out that the Wall has been blown up and flocks of birds are flying in the city. There are rebels on the streets. D-503 runs to the Guardian Bureau and tells S-4711 everything he knows about Mephi. Headlong D-503 - from the Guardian Bureau and - into one of the public restrooms. D-503’s head is now empty, light... When the air is pumped out from under the bell, she throws back her head, her eyes are half-closed, her lips are clenched - this reminds D-503 of something.

At the beginning, he writes as a person usually thinks, blissfully unaware of any other way of life and social system other than the one established by the authorities in his country.

This is said by the number sitting on the toilet next to D in the public restroom.

Meanwhile, I-330 confides in D the secrets of the revolution. Races have ceased to exist, and only individual anthropological traits indicate in numbers certain traits of ancestors. But, seeing another one, not even remembering the numbers, just the letter “F”, he runs out of the room in a rage.

Another female number is also found, in love with D-503, but hiding it for the time being. This is Yu, the person on duty at the entrance to the building where D’s apartment is located. Yu also works in the field of “child rearing.” He sees I-330 for the last time in his room: she came to find out what they were talking about with the Benefactor, and nothing more. After the meeting she leaves.

The writers of our country are talented people, as you are convinced of when you read their works, which are included in the school curriculum. Among the obligatory writers to study is Zamyatin, who wrote the excellent work We.

Zamyatin “We” summary by chapter

Just today we bring to your attention Zamyatin’s book We are in a brief chapter-by-chapter summary, thanks to which you will quickly get acquainted with the plot. After studying Zamyatin's novel We chapter by chapter in a summary, you will be able to answer the questions posed and analyze the work. The work itself is about the distant future, where a talented engineer makes notes so that their descendants can later read them.

He writes so that descendants can learn about the United State and the ideal ruler - the Benefactor, read about life, where We exist and this is from God, but I come from the devil.

Chapter 1

From the note in the first chapter we learn that the earth has submitted to the United State and the ruler, the Benefactor. People don't have names, only numbers. They are happy here. And now the construction of Integral is being completed. This spaceship must integrate the universe, destroy the wild curve and straighten it. After all, the line of an ideal unified state is straight, wise and precise. Thanks to the Integral, mathematical happiness can be brought to all other creatures on the planet. The great mathematician of the United State, D-503, is working on the construction of the ship; he also keeps notes, where he writes down all the thoughts of the happy residents.

Chapter 2

One spring day in the afternoon, his beloved O-90 dropped in on D-503 and they went for a walk. This was additional time, during which the same numbers walked under the State March. While walking, the hero met a stranger whose name was I-330. Somehow she managed to read our builder's mind. The hero became interested in the lady, who invited him to room 112. D-503 said that he would come if there was an outfit. Then, left alone with O, the girl told her lover that she would like to come to him at night. But he said that their meeting was scheduled for the day after tomorrow. The hero said goodbye to the girl, kissing her goodbye three times.

Chapter 3

In Chapter 3, the author decided to introduce the future reader to such concepts of civilization as the Tablet, Maternal and Paternal norms, and the Green Wall. D says that after the war no one crossed the Green Wall, which separates the city from the forest. At the same time, the Tablet is like that icon with which you want to read prayers. Thanks to these clocks, the planned life of the population takes place, which simultaneously wakes up, eats, works, walks, and goes to bed. Every day, twice a day, people have personal time, during which they can walk, meet with their other halves, or create and write, as the note writer does.

It is incomprehensible how people could previously live not according to the clock, not according to scientific ethics, without regulating time. He can't comprehend this. It was also absurd that sexual life was not regulated, where people, like animals, gave birth blindly. The author writes that this is difficult to believe, but there were times when people lived in the state of wild animals or herds, and even now such individuals can be met. D writes that this rarely occurs and is quickly eliminated. The Guardians are watching over everything.

Chapter 4

D actually got assigned to auditorium 112. They talked about the music of the past over the loudspeaker. One of the examples was performed by that stranger named I. Today D was in a mood and was constantly looking with his eyes for O, who was supposed to come to him in the evening. In general, all their rooms were glass so that their lives could be monitored. This also facilitated the functions of the Guardians and it was only on sexual days that curtains were allowed to be closed. And then at 21 O came with a pink coupon.

Chapter 5

In this part, D introduces the future reader to his world, which is understandable to him, although many will wonder, for example, what a pink coupon is. The author writes how the state defeated hunger in a two-hundred-year war, writes about how oil-based food was invented, how such a feeling as Love was defeated. Now they live according to a formula where anyone can choose a number. After making an application, you will be assigned the required number and on sexy days you can use the specified number and receive a pink book with coupons. Such relationships are much more pleasant and beneficial for the body.

Chapter 6

Chapter six mentions that their lives are not perfect yet. D writes that there will be Justice on the square, since one of the rooms violated the rules. Why go far when something incomprehensible happened to him, albeit in his personal time. He writes how I called him and made an appointment at the Ancient House. And within five minutes D and I-330 were at the airport. They arrived at a house where a strange old woman was sitting. She let the newcomers in. The hero began to examine the room, where chaos reigned all around. I-330 changed into a strange dress. Noticing that it was time, the mathematician suggested leaving so as not to be late. However, the woman refuses and offers to stay, breaking all the rules. The author of the note refuses, deciding to report to the Guardians about the revealed violations.

Chapter 7

Our hero is having a dream. Waking up, he realizes that he is ill, because dreams are considered a mental illness. The author goes on to say how brilliant Taylor was that he was able to integrate life. D, having had breakfast, went to Integral. On the way, he met Guardian S, whom he had already seen. I wanted to tell about I and her violation, but changed his mind, as it turned out that the Guardian knew the woman very well. He later met with O, who suggested that the hero was ill. And so the author of the notes decides to go to the doctor, and in the evening D and O solved problems that help them relax and clear their thoughts.

Chapter 8

In this recording, D recalls how, as a child, he was terrified by an irrational number. The mathematician goes to the Guardian Bureau, but on the way he met O and the writer R-13. After talking with them, the writer invites everyone to go visit him together, despite the fact that O has an appointment with him today. Everyone goes to the writer, where they talk about poets and their work. Next, D goes home, and R-13 lowers the curtains. The author of the notes concludes that the writer he and O, as a family, are a kind of non-isosceles triangle.

Chapter 9

Chapter 9 takes us to Cuba Square, where people have gathered. D. was also there. All eyes were turned to the Benefactor. He stood near the Machine in the square where the execution of a criminal who wrote blasphemous poetry is expected. The poet's poems began to be read on stage, among them was a poet we knew, a friend of D. The criminal went up to the Machine. By pressing the lever, the Benefactor killed the poet by sending him hundreds of thousands of volts of electric current. Atoms split and the poet turned into water.

Chapter 10

D receives a letter stating that I wrote him down. Since O is to come to him that evening, he sends her a copy of the notice, while he himself goes to the woman. O didn’t understand why she called him. He made it clear to her that he didn’t like her. I herself said that he was in her power, because he did not go to the Guardians. The woman smoked and also drank liquor. It was forbidden, but she didn't care. She offered alcohol to D, but he refused. Then the woman, having typed liquor into her mouth, during the kiss, poured the liquid into the mouth of the author of the notes. And then the hero, going crazy, almost confessed his love, but didn’t have time. It was necessary to get home, because after half past ten it was impossible to go out into the street. He couldn't sleep at home.

Chapter 11

Now D does not understand who he really is, he has lost faith in himself. Next, the poet comes to the man. They are talking. In the conversation, R says that O is booked with D for the day after tomorrow, and then our hero finds out that the poet is also familiar with I. This is where jealousy awoke in the man. The poet leaves, and the mathematician understands that now they don’t have a triangle, the feelings that have surfaced have ruined everything.

Chapter 12

D hopes to recover. He believes that everything will pass and will be as before. He is waiting to meet O. On his way to work, he reads the poet’s poems, and the Guardian reads them with him.

Chapter 13

The mathematician slept, considering himself recovered. He is waiting for the evening when O is supposed to come to him. But then a call from I, who asked him to leave. He wanted to put everything to rest by saying that it was controlled by the state, but that was not the case. Having met I, D is late for work. A doctor they know writes a certificate, after which the heroes go to the Ancient House. There they loved each other. After I it disappears.

Chapter 14

O comes to D, who immediately notices that the mathematician is different, not hers. D began to kiss her, but could not continue to surrender to love. The girl runs away, and the hero realizes that I broke his relationship not only with the poet, but also with O.

Chapter 15

D comes to the place where Integral is being built. There, the second builder informs him about a spy who has been sent to the Operations Bureau, where he will be tortured. The second assistant says that there are a lot of violators around the construction, but D advises him to have an operation to curb his fantasy.

Chapter 16

D misses I, whom he has not seen for a long time. Only a couple of times she flashed surrounded by men. She had a pink ticket to D, but she didn’t show up. The hero begins to be jealous of her, and then it seems to him that the Guardian is watching him.

D comes to I’s house which is why he is late. He goes to the doctor to get relief from work, and the doctor makes a diagnosis - he is sick, D has a soul. But there is no need to worry, because he is not the only one with a soul. Walking can cure it. He says that he needs to go to the Ancient House, as if hinting that I is waiting for him there.

Chapter 17

D goes to the House in the hope of seeing the woman. The old woman reports that I is in the house, but the hero cannot find her. Then he sees guardian S coming. The mathematician hides in the closet and falls through somewhere. As it turned out, there was an elevator there. In the underground corridor D met a doctor he knew, who took him to I. She was in her yellow dress. They leave the house, I makes an appointment for the day after tomorrow.

Chapter 18

Continuing to read the work of Evgeniy Zamyatin, in a brief summary, we again see our hero. He dreams of I and then he remembers all that terrible irrational number. In the evening D decided to take a walk, as the doctor advised. Watching the lectures, the mathematician understands that he does not want to be among the others. Returning from a walk, he is given a letter from O-90, who wrote that she was letting him go, although she loved him very much. She understands that he loves someone else.

Chapter 19

The first start of the Integral engine takes place, during which several people died. But it’s nothing, such a loss was not even noticed. D is waiting to meet I, but she didn’t come. But she sent a letter asking the mathematician to lower the curtains, creating the illusion that he had her. The hero got angry, but fulfilled the request. D goes to a lecture on childcare, where he met O. After the lecture, he goes home. O is waiting for him there. She admits that, despite everything, she wants D’s child. They copulate.

Chapter 20

The hero reflects on what happened, and if something happens, he is ready to die.

Chapter 21

Despite the fact that I was again registered with the mathematician, she does not come. D lowers the curtains, as before, and writes notes himself. Then the hero heads to the Ancient House to find the girl there, but meets Guardian S, who asks D to be careful. In the evening, controller Yu comes to D, telling her that the children at school drew a caricature of her, which is why she handed them over to the Guardians.

Chapter 22

There is a procession. They lead criminals to execution. And then a woman from the crowd rushed to one of the criminals. It seemed to the mathematician that this was his missing girlfriend. He rushed to her defense and was seized as an accomplice. But Guardian S defended him, saying that he was sick.

Chapter 23

Finally I came to the hero. She loves him and wants to be sure that he loves her too. She wants to know that he is ready to do anything for her. D feels that the woman is hiding something. I promises to tell everything, but after Unanimity.

Chapter 24

D thinks about the Day of Unanimity, during which the same ruler is chosen. The mathematician calls I and offers to go to the square that day together. But the woman refuses.

Chapter 25

The day has come. The benefactor with his speeches behind the podium. Nearby I, poet and guardian. The hero gets jealous, and then the unthinkable happens. During the voting, thousands of people rebelled and voted against the Benefactor. There is panic all around. I - wounded, she is carried in the arms of R. The mathematician takes the woman from him and carries her to the upper stand. They arrange to meet in an underground corridor. D thinks about what happened, does not understand how this happened and people rebelled.

Chapter 26

Oddly enough, the world has not changed, everything is as before. The newspaper reported that the Benefactor had been elected, although they tried to disrupt the elections. Mefi leaflets were posted along the street, one of which D helped number S tear down.

Chapter 27

D and I met. The woman took the mathematician to a place where he had never been. They found themselves behind a green wall. There the hero saw many people covered with fur. I calls on those gathered to destroy the wall, capture Integral in order to fly to other planets with like-minded people. It is necessary to change established orders and laws. Someone said that this was madness, but D picked up his companion, saying that it was precisely this madness that could not be avoided. After getting ready, everyone drank some of the contents of the bowl, and then D saw a familiar face in the crowd. He said that he saw the Guardian, but I claimed that no one knew about this place.

Chapter 28

I comes to D, Yu breaks in after her, but Yu is thrown out the door. I herself says that the mathematician can hand it over to the Guardians, but D says that he is different and will not hand it over. Then the woman says that the state is preparing something, because all the classrooms where medical tables are being prepared have been cancelled. Another woman suggested that the hero was a descendant of a mixed family, from a woman from the city and a man who lived behind the wall. She also told about Mefi that she fights for freedom and movement, in contrast to the state, which stands for order and stability. She leaves. Later, D receives a letter that the Guardians are heading towards him. He hides dangerous notes. The keeper, having found nothing, leaves.

Chapter 29

D once again goes to the Ancient House, where he has an appointment with I. Heading into the house, he sees a pregnant O. She is happy, but D understands that she is in danger. He wants to ask I to take her over the wall, but O, hearing the name of her rival, refuses to go with the mathematician.

Chapter 30

I shares my plans with D. Mefi planned to capture during the first test flight of the Integral. The hero claims that this is a revolution, but it cannot be avoided. I asks everyone to be locked in the dining room during lunch so that they can carry out their plans.

Chapter 31

Newspapers write that they have invented a method that will completely make people perfect. To do this, you need to come to the operation, which is carried out in classrooms. D is happy, shared his joy with I. She makes an appointment. The launch of the Integral itself is postponed due to operations, which the mathematician is happy about, because there is no need to betray the Integral. Returning home, he sees Yu, who reports that she forcibly took all the children for surgery. Everyone can follow the actions, because operations are carried out in plain sight. D, before undergoing surgery to remove the center of the brain that is responsible for fantasy, meets with I. She confronts him with a choice. A happy ideal life without her or he chooses I. He chooses the second.

Chapter 32

The integral is being prepared for launch, but people are refusing the operation. They begin to forcefully drive them, but they run away. D was among those running away. He met O, who agreed to go to I and hide behind the wall. However, D notices the surveillance. He sends the girl alone, writing a letter I. Many people claim that a naked, hairy man was seen at the Ancient House.

Chapter 33

The newspapers began to write about the need for an operation, and everyone who did not show up would be handed over to the Benefactor’s Machine.

Chapter 34

The ship is ready for testing. The mathematician sees I, which reports that O is safe. And then lunch came, everything was supposed to happen, but the man whom D considered Mephi turned out to be the Guardian. The revolution was prevented from taking place. I suspects D of treason. He also understands that he was reported by Yu, who could have read the last notes when he was not in the room.

Chapter 35

D searches the city for Yu to kill him, but doesn’t find him. In the crowd he sees I, who is being forced to undergo surgery. He wants to help her, but cannot get through the crowd. The raid begins and D runs away. In the evening, Yu herself comes to D. He lowers the curtains so that they don’t see the murder, but Yu, thinking about the connection, takes off her clothes. D laughs and it kills the woman. Yu gets dressed and admits that she didn’t give I away. The hero believes the woman.

Chapter 36

D called to him the Benefactor. He assured that D was used nothing more. They just wanted to get information out of him. These words hurt the man. He wants to see I.
He is in the square next to the Benefactor’s car, imagining how I will be executed. At that moment, for the first time, he regretted that he did not have a mother.

Chapter 37

When breakfast was taking place, everyone heard a roar and saw birds flying. People realized that the wall was blown up. Everyone heads to the place where the hole has formed. The mathematician finds out that I is somewhere in the city. He goes to her apartment, but it is empty and some kind of pogrom. He sees pink coupons for him and another man. Without waiting for the woman, the hero goes home.

Chapter 38

In the morning he woke up from the light. Opening his eyes, I saw I. She came for a few minutes, and they were waiting for her downstairs. D told about the meeting with the Benefactor and their conversation. However, I did not answer, and left.

Chapter 39

Chaos in the city, birds are flying, fighting is going on. D decides to go to the Guardians. Oh decided to confess everything. On the way, he saw the corpse of a poet he knew, and then, at the Bureau, he told S everything. As it turned out, he was one of the rebels and knew everything. So D was not mistaken when he saw a man similar to the Guardian behind the wall. D leaves and meets a scientist who is working on his calculations. He argued that the universe is not infinite. D was interested in the question of what is at the end of the universe. But he did not receive an answer, because he heard a clatter.

Chapter 40

The hero and scientist is captured. They are in the audience. They undergo operations. D feels healthy. The next day D is at the Benefactor's. He tells him everything. That same evening everyone was captured. D and the Benefactor were in the gas room where I was tortured, but she did not confess, although the others confessed to everything. They should all be executed in the square.
Further, D writes in the note that the rebels are still walking around the city, but a temporary wall has been erected to keep them out. He hopes that the United State will win, because reason and numbers are simply bound to win. This concludes the work of We Zamyatin.

The novel “We” by Zamyatin, written in 1920, describes a society of the distant future, in which the individual is subject to strict totalitarian control. The book was first published on English language in New York in 1924, after which a campaign to persecute him began in the writer's homeland. Zamyatin's dystopia was published in Russian only in 1988.

Main characters

D-503- engineer, builder of the Integral spacecraft, main character-narrator.

O-90– female number, partner D for “personal” hours.

I-330– female number, seductress D-503, conspirator.

Other characters

YU– female number, elderly controller.

R-13- male act, poet, comedian.

Doctor- male number, standing on the side of the conspirators.

Guardian S- the guardian of the United State, who went over to the side of the conspirators.

Benefactor- the permanent supreme ruler of the United State.

Entry 1

It's the 32nd century. Mankind has submitted to the absolute power of the One State headed by its ruler - the Benefactor. Construction of the Integral spacecraft will soon be completed. His main task is to "subdue the unknown creatures that live on other planets - perhaps still in a wild state of freedom."

D-503, “one of the mathematicians of the United State”, is working on the construction of the ship.

Record 2nd

D-503 admires the clear spring sky, with not a cloud in it. In the afternoon, the “all rounded” O-90 comes behind D.

While walking among other numbered people, D-503 meets a stranger - a thin and sharp I-330. Somehow she manages to read the engineer’s thoughts, and she invites him to room 112. This woman acts on D “unpleasantly, like an indecomposable irrational term accidentally inserted into an equation.”

Entry 3rd

D-503 explains such key concepts as Personal Clock, Tablet of Hours, Green Wall, Maternal Norm, Benefactor.

Since the distant Bicentennial War, no one has been outside the glass Green Wall, which fenced off the city from the dense forest.

The work of the United State is regulated by the Table of Hours, thanks to which all residents act like a perfectly coordinated mechanism: they wake up at the same time, start work and complete it, and go to bed. There are two private hours in the day when city residents can, at their discretion, draw the curtains, take a walk, or spend time at their desk.

Record 4th

The next day, D gets assigned to auditorium 112, where the phonolector remembers the musicians of the past who wrote music in a fit of inspiration. D’s new acquaintance, the thin I-330, sits at the piano in ancient clothes and plays a piece of ancient music.

D is looking forward to the evening private hour, when O is supposed to come to him with a pink ticket entitling him to have the curtains closed.

Entry 5

D-503 sets out the laws by which the United State lives. After the victory in the Bicentennial War, only 0.2% of the population remained alive.

“The ancestors finally conquered the Hunger at great cost,” when “the modern, oil-based food” was invented. Also, the residents of the United State managed to get rid of such a feeling as Love, and now everyone can pre-select the desired number, write a statement, and meet with him on strictly regulated sexual days. It is very convenient and practical.

Entry 6

D admits with bitterness that even the United State “has a few more steps to reach the ideal.” There are also numbers that break the rules, and then a celebration of Justice takes place on the main square.

However, D himself is not so clean before the law. One day, during a private hour, he went with I to the Ancient House, which was radically different from the usual blocks with transparent walls in which the rooms live. His companion left for a while, and then came out “in a short, old-fashioned bright yellow dress, a black hat, and black stockings.”

D-503 was late for the lecture, but I asked him to stay. It was an unthinkable violation of all the rules.

Entry 7

D has a dream and wakes up in horror because he knows that "dreams are a serious mental illness." On the way to the Integral, he notices Guardian S and tries to tell him about his meeting with I in the Ancient House and her violation of the rules, but at the last moment he changes his mind.

O thinks that D is sick and needs to see a doctor. They spend the evening solving “problems from an old problem book: it’s very calming and clears your thoughts.”

Entry 8

D recalls how, during his school years, he was terrified by irrational numbers. He is about to go to the Guardian Bureau, but on the way he meets O and R-13. Sweet O's companion is not to the liking of the pragmatic D, as "R-13 has a bad habit of joking."

O is scheduled for R-13 for the afternoon personal hour, but since half an hour is enough for them, the writer invites D to his house. In fact, their love isosceles triangle is a family in which D is comfortable and cozy.

Entry 9

D is located on the main square, along with thousands of other numbers that came to the feast of Justice. "Heavy, stone as fate, Benefactor" directs the Machine, killing criminals with thousands of volts of electric current. After the execution, all that remains of them is “only a puddle of chemically pure water, which just a minute ago was beating wildly and red in the heart.”

Entry 10th

D receives a notification according to which I-330 is assigned to him for this evening. A whirlwind of thoughts rushes through the engineer’s head, and he understands that “there will be a difficult, ridiculous, absolutely illogical conversation.”

I makes it clear that D is in her hands because he did not report the violation to the Guardians. After this date, D can’t sleep.

Entry 11

For the first time in his life, D feels unsure of himself, he does not understand who he really is. R-13 comes to see him, and during the conversation he casually mentions that he is also closely acquainted with I.

This news unbalances D, who realizes with horror that “all this madness - love, jealousy - is not only in idiotic ancient books.”

Entry 12

D is sure that he is seriously ill and dreams of recovery. He has no doubt that he will soon recover, since that night there were no “dreams or other painful phenomena.”

He is reading a book with poems by R, which he brought him the day before. One of the Guardians reads poetry with D.

Entry 13

After a sound, dreamless sleep, D is confident that he is completely healthy. An unexpected call from I disrupts his usual daily routine. He is late for work, and his companion takes a certificate from a doctor he knows.

Now they are free. The couple heads to the Ancient House, where they make love without pink coupons or permits. It seems as if he is falling into his “old dream, so clear now.”

Entry 14

D goes down “to the duty officer to get the right to the curtains,” since O is supposed to come that evening with a pink coupon. However, the date is not planned from the very beginning, since D acutely understands “how empty everything is, given away.”

Unable to bear D's indifference, he cries bitterly and then runs away. D realizes that I has taken both R and O from him.

Entry 15

D arrives at the Integral construction site. From the Second Builder he learns that while he was sick, an “unnumbered man” was caught. He was taken to the Operating Room, where “the best and most experienced doctors work under the direct supervision of the Benefactor himself.”

The violator will be tortured using the Gas Bell. A person is placed under a glass bell and various gases are pumped under pressure until he gives away valuable information. But this is not inhuman torture, but exclusively concern “for the security of the United State, in other words, for the happiness of millions.”

Entry 16

D greatly misses I, whom he has not seen for many days. One day “she flashed by, for a second filled the yellow, empty world,” and just as quickly disappeared.

D turns to the doctor, and he makes a terrible diagnosis - the patient has a soul. However, walking, in particular to the Ancient House, will help cure this ailment. Thus, the doctor reminds D that he will meet with I there.

Entry 17

D heads to the Ancient House in the hope of meeting I there, but he fails to find her. During the search, the mathematician notices the approaching keeper, and in a panic hides in the closet. Once safe, he “slowly, gently floated down somewhere.”

In the dungeon, D meets a doctor he knows, who promises to bring I. While waiting for the meeting, D’s “lips, hands, knees are trembling.” He meets I in a yellow dress, and she makes an appointment with him for the day after tomorrow.

Entry 18

D goes to bed and immediately sinks “to the sleepy bottom, like an overturned, overloaded ship.” He dreams of I in a pink dress, behind the mirrored door of his closet. Waking up, D tries to determine what the soul is, but plunges even further into the abyss of chaos.

On Doctor D's advice, he goes for a walk. In the evening, he receives a letter from O-90 in which she confesses her love to D, and at the same time lets him go so that he can be happy with I.

Entry 19

The first test launch of “Integral” takes place, during which “a dozen unwary numbers” die. However, no one pays attention to this unfortunate incident, and the work continues.

The hero goes to a lecture on childcare, where he meets O. In the evening of the same day, O asks D for one favor - to leave her a child. Such a violation is punishable by execution, but O is ready to sacrifice herself just to feel the birth of a new life within herself. D agrees.

Entry 20

D analyzes what happened and comes to the conclusion that he is ready to die in the Benefactor’s Machine. If Operations O calls his name, he will be killed along with her.

Entry 21

I again does not come on her day, instead of her there is only “an indistinct note that does not explain anything.” Hoping to find her, D goes to the Ancient House. There he meets Guardian S, who asks him to be more careful.

In the evening, D meets an elderly controller, Yu, who complains to him that the children depicted her “in some kind of fish form.” She, of course, loves children, but did not fail to hand them over to the Guardians.

Entry 22

D witnesses a procession - three criminals are being escorted. One of them, noticing a familiar face in the crowd, stops, but the guard clicks “at him with the bluish spark of an electric whip.” A girl rushes towards the young man, and it seems to D that it is I.

Entry 23

I comes to D and talks about his love for him. But she wants to be sure that D is ready to do anything for her sake. The mathematician feels that the woman is not telling her something. She agrees to tell him everything, but only after Unanimity Day.

Entry 24

D reflects on the great Day of Unanimity, during which the same ruler is invariably chosen. At the same time, “the elections themselves have a rather symbolic meaning,” and are intended to emphasize that the people of the One State are “a single, powerful million-celled organism.”

The mathematician invites I to go to the main square together, but she refuses.

Entry 25

A solemn anthem sounds, and “the Benefactor in white robes, who wisely bound us hand and foot with the beneficent snares of happiness,” descends from the heavens onto the air.

“The rustle of millions of hands” sweeps through the rows - everyone votes “for” the Benefactor, and after “thousands of hands waved upward - “against”.” A terrible panic begins, I is wounded, and D carries her in his arms away from the maddened crowd.

Entry 26

TO big surprise D, the familiar world still continues to exist. The United State Newspaper reports that, despite the machinations of enemies, for the 48th time the same Benefactor, who has repeatedly proven his unshakable wisdom, was unanimously elected.”

All streets in the United State are plastered with Mephi leaflets, and the Guardians destroy them urgently.

Entry 27

D meets I and she takes him beyond the Green Wall. Finding himself in the forbidden zone, the mathematician is most amazed by the sun - “they were some kind of living fragments, constantly jumping spots, which blinded his eyes and made his head spin.”

“A crowd of three to four hundred... people” is noisy in the clearing. I appeals to them with a call to capture the "Integral" and go to other planets in order to forever destroy the laws and orders established by the Benefactor. Many people think this is crazy, but D supports his companion.

Unexpectedly, D notices the familiar face of the Guardian in the crowd, but I claims that no one knows about this place.

Entry 28

I comes to D and reports that the government is up to something - “something is being prepared in the auditorium buildings, some tables, doctors in white.” She also suggests that D is a mixed-race descendant and is the son of a woman from the city and a man who lived beyond the Green Wall.

I tells mathematics about the Mefi who are desperately fighting for freedom. Later, D receives a letter warning him of the arrival of the Guardians. He manages to hide the dangerous notes, and the Guardians leave with nothing.

Entry 29

Heading to the Ancient House to meet I, D notices the pregnant O. She is very happy, and thanks D for this happiness. However, the mathematician is worried - he knows perfectly well what fate awaits O-90 for illegal pregnancy.

D invites her to go beyond the Green Wall and experience the true joy of motherhood - to see how the child “will grow in her arms, become round, and fill out like a fetus.” Having learned that only I can do this, O resolutely refuses help.

Entry 30

I says that “among the hundreds taken at random by the Guardians yesterday, there were 12 Mephis,” and you need to act as quickly and decisively as possible. A delay of 2-3 days can be fatal.

The capture of the Integral is scheduled for the day after tomorrow - on the day of its first test flight. And then in the hands of I and her like-minded people there will be “a weapon that will help end everything at once, quickly, without pain.”

Entry 31

The next day, D reads in the State Newspaper that the United State intends to finally make people ideal, completely depriving them of their imagination. To do this, it is enough to carry out a small operation, destroying the “pathetic brain nodule” - the center of fantasy.

Because of this news, the launch of Integral is postponed. D is glad of this, because he does not need to betray his own brainchild. He has high hopes for the Operation, hoping in this way to regain his former calm.

However, I harshly confronts him with a choice - “Operation and one hundred percent happiness or...”. D chooses the second option - an unknown, frightening future, but together with I.

Entry 32

The first numbers to undergo the Operation, with the banner “We are the first!” We have already operated! Everyone is behind us! they are trying to drive the remaining numbers to the operating tables. D, along with many others, manages to escape.

The mathematician meets O, who agrees to take refuge behind the Green Wall - he does not want to undergo an operation after which he will not be able to love his child. D gives her a letter to I, and directs her to the Ancient House.

Entry 33

The next day, D learns from the newspaper that work will be suspended until all numbers undergo surgery. This is a mandatory condition for everyone, and “those who fail to appear are subject to the Benefactor’s Machine.”

Entry 34

"Integral" is ready for testing. He rises into the air and goes beyond earth's atmosphere. The appointed hour is approaching when Mephi must take the reins of power into their own hands. However, one of them turns out to be the Guardian, and the plans for the coup are destroyed. I suspects D of treason.

Entry 35

To prove his innocence I, the mathematician decides to kill controller Yu - he is sure that it was her fault that the planned coup was thwarted. He searches for her all day around the city, but does not find her anywhere.

In the evening, Yu herself appears to D. He lowers the curtains and swings the rod, intending to kill her. Yu is sure that D acts this way in a fit of passion, and “it was so unexpected, so stupid” that he lowers the rod from his hand and begins to laugh. At that moment D understands “that laughter is the most terrible weapon: with laughter you can kill everything - even murder.”

Yu admits that she did not give I away. The bell rings - the Benefactor himself urgently calls D to his place.

Entry 36

The benefactor reveals the truth to D - the traitors are not interested in him in himself. He is of value to them only as the builder of Integral. Daring to raise his eyes to the Benefactor, D sees in front of him “a bald, Socratic-bald man, and on his bald head there are small drops of sweat.” Unable to contain his laughter, D runs away.

Entry 37

During breakfast, an unexpected incident occurs - birds appear in the sky, flying into the United State through the destroyed Green Wall.

In the resulting crowd, D tries to find I, but to no avail.

Entry 38

Waking up in the morning from a bright light, D sees I in front of her. She has very little time, and the mathematician tries to justify himself to her. He tells her about his meeting with the Benefactor. I, without answering anything, leaves D.

Entry 39

D decides to go to the Guardian Bureau and confess everything to them. He finds an acquaintance, Guardian S, and begins to frantically and confusingly, “in awkward lumps, shreds,” talk about everything that happened. But the Guardian admits to him that he himself belongs to the conspirators, and he knows about everything.

D leaves the Bureau and meets his neighbor, a scientist who managed to prove the finitude of the Universe.

Entry 40

The mathematician and his scientist neighbor, “as they do not have a certificate of the Operation,” are sent to undergo a procedure to remove fantasy.

The next day D comes to the Benefactor and tells him everything. That evening, D is present during the torture “in the famous Gas Room.” A woman is brought there who vaguely resembles someone D. Despite the torment, she, unlike her comrades, does not utter a word. Tomorrow she will be executed along with others in the Benefactor's Machine.

But not everything is calm in the United State, and “in the western quarters there is still chaos, roaring, corpses, animals.” The rooms manage to isolate themselves from them with a temporary wall of high-voltage waves. D has no doubt about the victory of the United State.

Conclusion

The dystopia “We” represents a confrontation between reality and ideology. Wanting to get rid of all problems, residents of the United State kill everything human in themselves, thereby depriving themselves of the joy of life.

A brief retelling of “We” will be especially useful for reader's diary. After reading it, we recommend reading it full version novel.

Dystopia is a completely special genre of literature. On the one hand, this is a description of a world that simply cannot exist: a cruel world, intolerant of the manifestation of human individuality. On the other hand, ordinary life without any fantastic elements, only on paper. And from such similarity to our reality, sometimes it becomes a little scary...

This is the novel written by the Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin, “We”. He was the first to create this kind of work. The great Aldous Huxley, along with George Orwell, became his followers.

Zamyatin, "We". Brief summary of the work

The novel is written in the form of a diary kept by a citizen of the United State. His name is D-503. More precisely, this is his “number”. There are no names here, because even they can influence what the Benefactor, the omnipotent and omniscient ruler, so condemns.

From the first diary entries we learn about the structure of life in the United State. Everyone here wears the same clothes - unifs, and only their color identifies their gender. Each one has its number written on it. In fact, the people living here are not citizens: that’s what everyone calls each other - numbers.

It is worth noting that Zamyatin wrote “We,” the summary of which we are now considering, in 1920. Since the novel clearly shows a parallel with Soviet reality, the book, naturally, was not published in our country during the writer’s lifetime.

Next we learn that D-503 is one of the talented scientists, a great mathematician, who, like many other residents of the United State, is working on the creation of INTEGRAL - a spaceship, which in the near future will have to go with the crew to explore distant planets. Zamyatin wrote “We,” a summary of which you are now reading, in such a way that it is impossible not to believe in the terrifying United State, fenced by the Green Wall, behind which live the so-called savages - the people who remained there after the Great Bicentennial War.

Everyone here has the opportunity to have sexual relations with any other number of the opposite sex - you just need to take a special pink coupon. Most often, D-503 meets with O-90, a short, plump girl. The main character lives like this - according to a schedule regulated by the Tablet of Hours, until he meets I-330 - a revolutionary who, along with some other residents of the United State, is going to blow up the Green Wall in order to break free. At first, D-503 thinks this is nonsense, and finds the woman terribly unpleasant. However, gradually, unexpectedly for himself, a feeling for I-330 appears in him, which he had never experienced before - love.

How did Zamyatin finish “We,” the summary of which we have almost finished reading? D-503 together with I-330 and other revolutionaries achieved what they wanted. The wall was blown up, the numbers saw savages for the first time in a long time, chaos ensued in the United State. Some managed to escape - there, to freedom. However, all those who managed to be detained (among them the main character) are subjected to the Great Operation, which deprives imagination. Those who were the main organizers of the explosion, including I-330, are executed using the Gas Bell.

You have just read the summary of “We”. Zamyatin put his whole soul into this work, and therefore it is simply necessary to get acquainted with it in its entirety in any case.
